I have read several other books by Richard Dawkins, (The Selfish Gene, The Blind Watchmaker and The God Delusion), and he never ceases to amaze and educate me in the "facts and truth of reality." In a very clear and simple (Too easy and too simple at times), way this fantastic book explains the unique differences between magical thinking and scientific evaluations. Even though I suspect Mr. Dawkins wrote this book for children, adults who also believe in magical answers also need to read this educational book. He emphasizes truthfully, that real magic is how our universe began and how life evolved over billions of years. Each chapter begins with a question followed with a mystical ancient story and he than explains the factual scientific answer. There are 12 interesting and informative chapters. They include the following:Chapter 1: What is reality? What is magic? 2. Who was the first person? 3. Why are there so many different kinds of animals? 4. What are things made of? 5. Why do we have night and day, winter and summer? 6. What is the sun? 7. What is a rainbow? 8. When and how did everything begin? 9. Are we alone? 10. What is an earthquake? 11. Why do bad things happen? 12. What is a miracle?In conclusion, this is the kind of book that is so interesting that it keeps you turning the pages. He may be aiming for children in the way the information is presented. But, I think most people (the average adult-like me) is not scientifically brilliant. We can quote basic facts about science, which we are most likely regurgitating anyway-not truly understanding. Dawkins gives simple, yet clear explanations for many scientific truths that escape me. He brings me closer to a clearer understanding of the world around me.Aiming for children or not, this book will educate anyone who's highest level of science education was in an American high school 20 years ago, despite their viewing of countless Attenborough narrated documentaries.Many of us think we understand evolution. Nonsense. Most people who say they understand it, have nothing more than a confused idea of it. For those people (of which I am one) you will find the section entitled, "Who was the first person?" a really great place to start. Having a firm grasp of the basic idea of evolution is the first step. Get that before you move on to weightier concepts. Most people have HEARD of evolution, fewer people actually study it.This book will inspire children to ask deeper and more profound questions about the things they don't yet understand. Parents will fill in some of the many gaps in their own scientific shortcomings...so hopefully they will be able to have discussions with their children about science. It's either that, or look ignorant in front of your children as their knowledge surpasses yours by age fifteen. In fact, this should be a great book to read WITH your child. I am really looking forward to sharing it with my four-year-old in a few years.Or, you could skip this one and pick up another volume of "biblical stories for children" such as Noah's Ark, or The Garden of Eden. What kind of parent will you be?

It was great fun. I am a (retired) academic biologist and I WISH that in the 1940s and early 1950s when I was a scholar and undergraduate student there had been someone like Richard Dawkins to introduce me to the wonders of the Life Sciences. The youngsters today are privileged to have access to works such as he has published.. Like Dawkins, I was born in Africa and had first-hand experience of much of what he so eloquently describes. Like him I was "hooked" on the Biological and Earth sciences early. We were privileged . However I still envy the fledgling scientists who have books like 'The Magic of Reality" to ease their way in to formal biological studies.

This is a fantastic book. 5 stars for the book in hard-cover form. But the paper back version loses a good part of it's readability for a young reader.I borrowed the hard cover version from a local library, and it is fantastic. One of the good features about the hard cover version are the pictures. The paper back version I bought here has none of the pictures. My daughter (12 yo) liked the hard cover book, but only got half way through it. I bought the paperback to let her finish at her leisure. However, without the pictures the material is a much less interesting source of information. Don't bother trying to save money and shelf space. The paper back version is not the same as the hard cover in much more critical ways than those.

I am always looking for well written Juvenile non fiction books to support my lessons, this book fits the bill. With many subtopics, interesting facts, great illustrations, and a glossary of terms; this book has a great scope of info that is very appropriate for upper elementary through jr. high and even for "reluctant readers" in high school. I was thrilled to discover this series and after browsing though, went ahead and ordered other titles.

A good quick read with many colorful illustrations.

This is definitely not a waste of money for me. I am so thankful I came across this information. Great book, informative. Magnesium is SO IMPORTANT and the majority of people are deficient and are unaware of the deficiency as doctors just prescribe more medications without knowing or caring that most drugs deplete magnesium, causing complex problems that doctors treat with additional drugs. This book answered ALL of my questions concerning prescribed medications and the damaging side effects caused by them.

If you have ANY health challenges at all, especially chronic things, magnesium deficiency is a likely aspect of whatever the picture is. Dr. Dean has figured out really important information and product line to reset your mineral levels. Not just another doc with a supplement company. She's credible, grounded and people are having fabulous results on her program. Magnesium is utilized in 800 enzyme processes and the detox system, just for starters. If you have figured out that chemical meds are not the answer for you- her Re-set program may be the Godsend for you that it has been for me and the few people (so far) in my life who have been up for trying the intervention on themselves. This book and my applying it to my recovery from MCS disease could have saved me 4 really horrible years of debilitating illness and my entire retirement savings spent on expensive supplements and protocols that never really delivered the stability that my system is starting to achieve after not even 1 month following her protocol. Everyone is different, and, 80-% of us are magnesium deficient. I promise you, she is worth listening to. Best, most useful info I have found in 4 years of researching and trying things with getting my life back on the line. Happy to say i am doing terrific and the more I listen to her radio show and read her blogs, the more I appreciate her work and contribution to health care in general and my ability to take care of my system and understand what is going on within it in new and empowering ways.

I really wanted to like this book. While it was jammed packed with information, it didn't have much at all about magnesium chloride, which I was most interested in learning about. While there are many types of Magnesium, the author pushes her product every chance she gets & in a very repetitive manner. For this reason, I give the book 3 stars. The book leans heavily towards the authors product making the book seem bias to the other Magnesium products out there.

Daniel Carlat, M.D., is on the faculty of Tufts Medical School and did his psychiatric training at Harvard Medical School and Masschusetts General Hospital, where he was chief resident of the inpatient psychiatric unit. It is good to see a doctor finally reflect on what has become of psychiatry. We need more champions for the art and science of psychotherapy. Daniel Carlat has made a good start by showing that psychiatry has become little more than a blind, often negligent, pill-pushing caste. Although he does see medication as having a place in treating mental illness he nonetheless acknowledges the dearth of true psychotherapy.I suspect such a book may not be popular among psychiatrists but truth is painful and it's high time someone came out to remind them what patients expect and deserve... real, humane treatment.Kudos to Dr. Carlat... now we need more whistle-blowers to shed true insight into just how damaging many of the meds are and that continue to be prescribed at an alarming rate.

It's not news that the profession of psychiatry is in a crisis state. There have been many books, articles, and blogs written criticizing psychiatry. There's no shortage of things to criticize. The fact that there is little understanding of the neurobiology of psychopathology, that there are no diagnostic tests for psychiatric disorders, that drugs have become widely prescribed with little evidence supporting their long-term efficacy, that most psychiatrists have become exclusively pill pushers, eschewing the need to understand and connect to their patients beyond a 15 minute med check, and that many psychiatrists have allowed themselves to be corrupted by drug money, are some of the problems with contemporary psychiatry.Daniel Carlat, in his book, provides an insider's look at the problems with psychiatry. Carlat was motivated to pursue a career in psychiatry because of his depressed mother's suicide. Carlat did his residency at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), beginning in 1992, after the introduction of second generation antidepressants like Prozac. Although his supervisors were divided between therapy and drug advocates, Carlat admits that "the main thing you learn in a psychiatric residency, then or now, is how to write prescriptions" (p. 34).After completing his residency, Carlat, like most psychiatrists of his generation, specialized in psychopharmacology, i.e. prescribing drugs. He saw patients for 15 to 20 minute medication visits. The reason why he and other psychiatrists did this was that it was more profitable. Seeing three patients an hour for med checks allowed him to make about $180 an hour minus expenses. Seeing one patient an hour for therapy allowed him to make between $80 to $100 an hour, which is about 50% less.Carlat talks about his experiences as a "hired gun," someone who is paid (i.e. bought out) by drug companies. Carlat worked for Wyeth Pharmaceuticals to promote the antidepressant drug Effexor to primary care doctors. He made $750 per talk. He describes that although he was officially an "expert consultant," in reality he was basically a highly-credentialed salesman. Sales reps attended his talks, and they communicated to him via body language and other feedback whether he was doing what they expected of him, i.e. to promote their product. When he tried to be more balanced and neutral, they criticized him. He eventually gave up his hired gun position.Carlat describes his own experiences as a target of the pharmaceutical marketing machine. Ambien, a sleeping pill marketed by Sanofi-Aventis, was going off patent soon. Safoni-Aventis wanted doctors to prescribe Ambien CR ("Controlled Release"), a longer-acting drug than the original. Carlat was skeptical of the science behind the new pill. Valerie, his drug sales rep, knew that he wasn't prescribing much Ambien CR. Valerie was persistent, offering a free medical textbook as a gift. Carlat prescribed Ambien CR to a patient, subconsciously or consciously reciprocating Valerie's gift. The patient didn't like the drug due to a hangover side effect. Carlat didn't tell his patient that he prescribed Ambien CR as a favor to a drug rep.Carlat talks about the overdiagnosis of psychiatric disorders. The DSM-IV, the "bible" of psychiatry, classifies mental disorders based on a list of symptoms. If you have five of the symptoms it mentions, you have depression. If you only have four, you don't have depression. Since this symptom-based diagnosis is ultimately based on subjective or arbitrary factors, there is no way to prevent multiplication or redefinition of disorders.The problems with the DSM also affect clinical practice. For example, bipolar disorder is a diagnosis in the DSM based on symptoms such as alternating manic and depressive episodes. This diagnosis was intended for adults and older teenagers. Joseph Biederman and his colleagues at MGH decided to expand the diagnosis of bipolar disorder to toddlers. In 1996, Biederman published a paper reporting that nearly a quarter of children he was treating for ADHD also met his criteria for bipolar disorder. His diagnostic change led to a forty-fold increase in the number of children and adolescents treated for bipolar disorder.What is Carlat's prescription for change in his broken profession? Carlat wants psychiatrists to go back to providing therapy, which can be balanced with medications. 15 minute medication checks are not sufficient to get to know a patient, to know what makes him tick. Sometimes changes in symptoms are not due to medications but life changes or stresses. Since most psychiatrists don't have time to inquire about anything other than symptoms and medications, they are blind to what is going on in their patients' lives. Carlat changed his own practice from exclusively 15-20 minute med checks, to somewhat longer medication sessions (20- 25 minutes), alternating with 45 minute therapy visits. He doesn't use traditional psychodynamic therapy, but instead "a version of supportive therapy that I now try to weave into the fabric of all my sessions with patients, whether they are seeing me primarily for medications or for therapy" (p. 199).Carlat assumes that drugs are effective. In his book, he gives a number of case examples of patients whom he says were helped by medications he prescribed. But how does he know that? His conclusions about drug effectiveness are based on his own clinical observations, which derive from 15 to 25 minute appointments. How can he, or any other psychiatrist, make any conclusion about effectiveness based on such short patient visits, and in the absence of any objective lab tests?In conclusion, this book is a well-written, honest account of systemic problems in psychiatry written by someone with an insider's perspective on the profession. Carlat does an excellent job describing the drug money corruption in psychiatry, in the overmedicalized view of a complicated phenomenon such as mental illness, and in the need for psychiatrists to better know their patients and provide some of them with therapy. He fails, however, to go far enough in questioning drug efficacy.

This is a great story regarding the selling of the psychiatric industry. Dr. Carlat does a great job explaining the problems with modern psychiatric drug trials, the immense problem with conflict of interest among the "researchers" and offers some ideas for how to change. It's important that medicine is as nonbiased as possible and we get back to finding what is best for our patients lives, and not about padding our pocket books. Thank-you, Dr. Carlat

About the Author

I am a recovering professional accountant and business executive from Canada who went to law school in my forties to become a white collar crime prosecutor. Apparently a strong knowledge of John Grisham's writing and most of Law & Order does not a criminal lawyer make! Instead I added my consulting experience at Price Waterhouse to existing business and new intellectual property knowledge to create a software product that was initially thought to be for entrepreneurs and startups. Over the past three years, we have broadened the platform to include risk assessment, lead generation for numerous providers including accountants, consultants, and attorneys. I started a blog for Traklight about four years ago and now write for Forbes, American Bar Association s Law Technology Today and Law Student Division Before the Bar, and have contributed to Attorney at Work. My second career as a writer has become a combination of my thirty years of accounting, business, consulting, finance, law, technology and time teaching in Canada. Prior to law school, I worked as a Director of Finance for one of Canada's largest law firms and later in the engineering and construction industry. So the notion of time recording and billing by the hour is not new to me. Plus, my early days in Montreal as an auditor and later as a consultant had me recording my time for years. I worked in the then Big Eight, now the Big Four accounting firms, where I honed my skills around recording and billing hours and the associated metrics. In fact, the audit industry did flat fees way back in the 1980s. Our engagements were all budgeted based on hours needed to complete with an appropriate margin for partner profit. For most of my career, I have worked in the professional services industry and all thirty plus years in large and small business. In the early 1990s, I worked with key performance metrics within the education system in British Columbia. Applying key performance indicators (KPIs) to the education industry was novel at that time and when I worked at the Canadian law firm, we only had traditional utilization types of measures. When I was with a large Canadian law firm, the concept of budgeting for litigation was a foreign concept to the industry and as I dove into this further, I realized that some of the concepts around the legal industry business development and client satisfaction were still missing from legal KPIs. One of my university business professors coined the term start with the end in mind. My personal goal with this book is to provide practical information for solos and small law firms to better measure what they are doing well and what needs to be improved. The plan is to start with existing data and systems to create a simple set of KPIs. These KPIs will provide the information for attorneys to make data driven decisions to take the necessary actions to improve their practice in terms of business efficiencies and profits but ultimately to create satisfied clients who refer more business. Mary has written the ultimate playbook for every lawyer charged with managing the profitability and growth of a small law firm (or accounting firm, for that matter). Using straightforward language and digestible numeric examples, she outlines precisely how to measure inputs and outputs, then interpret and evaluate the results. She also challenges us to outsource tasks that are beyond our control and to leverage technology as much as we can. This book is required reading for attorneys that look at their practices as businesses and should probably be the focus of a practice management course in every law school.

By far the most comprehensive book on the topic, it is occasionally challenging to read (this, I think, is in large part due to the traditional design inclinations of the publisher). Mary's explainations are thorough and detailed, though she takes things in a different order than I would. (For example, I would list client satisfaction among the top 3, perhaps even the #1, most important metric to capture). Nonetheless the book gives a strong overview and detailed instructions for building a more data-driven approach to law practice management, something that will almost certainly give a competitive advantage to firms that adopt it.

I thought this is a great little book for law firm managers, especially lawyers who manage their own firms part time while they "law around" with the clients. Some basic accounting knowledge is helpful but probably not required as the author gives painstakingly detailed instructions for setting up systems required for the various measures of law firm performance. Well worth the price.

Yes, it's a hefty price tag. No, that should not stop you from buying this book, which will walk you through the key performance indicators you and your employees need to use to grow your law firm. You can't get that kind of help from a consultant for anything like the cover price of this book.

Small law Firm KPI's is the 'money ball' for lawyers. Data-driven decisions are the future of every industry, and are not just limited to high tech companies or professional sports teams. The incorporation of KPIs in professional services is what will make or break small (or large) service providers, as they try to stay competitive, or simply just stay alive, in the 21st Century. Mary Juetten's book is the essential reference guide for the small law firm, it is clearly laid out and is illustrated with numbers and examples so that anyone (even not the most numbers-savvy reader) can follow and implement. The book's clear organization around 7 well-defined KPIs makes it easily transferrable into other professional service industries, such as: financial services, accounting, and even medical services. The small dentist could just as well benefit from improving profitability, efficiency and customer satisfaction, using data-driven decision analysis. Looking forward to seeing this book, and its underlying philosophy, take hold in the legal community.

Mary has written the quintessential book for anyone looking to start their own firm. So many of us (me included) did not how how to run a business after law school. Most of our experiences are trial and error, mostly error. Mary's KPI teaching helped me understand where I went wrong and where I needed to improve. In my current position I have used the teaching to expand my program and grow my customer base. This helped me turn the corner to making a successful program.

This book very much reflects its author: intelligent, diligent and down to earth. Lawyers who choose to practise solo or in small firms simply must get to grips with the business that makes their practice possible; far too many good lawyers have foundered because they lost sight of the business. Working with KPIs may seem threatening; however, only by giving attention to how your business works you can start to make changes for the better. Mary Juetten has delivered a practical guide packed with worked examples that will help beginners begin and improvers improve. There is such a lot of value in this book so buy a copy and then (per Mary’s personal motto) ‘JFDI’ (just freaking do it).

Some others reviews have claimed this book is good for an introduction to modern opengl. Although it could be used for a such a purpose, I wouldn't recommend using it that way. The introduction portion is entirely in the first chapter and is awkwardly organized with too much emphasis on largely redundant shader examples with not enough emphasis on the opengl code required to use the shaders. Furthermore, the writing is super dry and suffers from some pacing issues (some minor things are explained in a drawn out matter while some more advanced items are glossed over).That being said, there is a lot of useful information in this book and a lot of interesting topics are covered. This would make an excellent second book in your collection. Get your introduction from another book like "Anton's OpenGL 4 Tutorials", and use this book in the manner the title suggests - a cookbook with recipes for handling various topics.

I taught a beginners (undergrad) course on OpenGL Shading and this book was instrumental in making the course possible. It has very little fluff, is written in a very clean, well structured manner, and is easy to approach. The assumption is that people already know a good bit of programming and have some familiarity with Graphics APIs. I would say this is THE book to read for someone who is already familiar with legacy OpenGL and wants to upgrade to shader programming and new APIs.

Awesome book. The author is very helpful in fixing source code problems on GitHub as well. Samples are compact, organized, and intuitive to understand if you have experience with C++ and platform-independent windowing systems such as SFML, SDL, or in this case GLFW.

Maybe useful if you know absolutely nothing about GLSL. Even then, the docs are more useful.

It is very useful for me. Because it teach from the ground. I recommend this book for novice.

I have been able to run all the examples, although I have only finished the first four chapters (162 pages out of 369). Actually, the Uniform Block example didn't work as the fragment shader used the elements of the uniform block without giving the block name first (e.g. using InnerColor versus BlobSettings.InnerColor). Make sure you have set glUseProgram() before doing calls like glGetUniformIndices().
