As a teen and young adult, I devoured books about Himalayan expeditions by Bennington, Roskelly, Wickwire and the like. They spurred me on to mountain adventures of my own. Today, mountains are summitted by ultra fast, lean groups, or by bloated pay-to-play guided tours.This book took me back to those thrilling days of mountain expeditions, with the logistical, technological, and interpersonal challenges that all must be overcome to find success. Fascinating, I speed read through it in about four sittings.

This book was so very well written. This is the 3rd book I have read about caves and people who dive them. I haved learned a great deal and it is facinating. Some things they do, when exploring these caves, I could never do. I give them all so much credit for their bravery. I highly recommend this book!

As a wanna be cave diver, I found this book to be amazing. The personality if those who explore the unknown is fascinating. I couldn't put this book down, even though I knew who would live and die.This is a great book written by two of the cavers involved in the expedition. Those two are well-known for their expertise and discoveries. There are many other well known divers and cavers included in this book. I think anybody who enjoys adventure sports would find this to be a great book.I couldn't put it down and wished that it wouldn't end!

Interesting and a little hair raising. To explore in conditions like these, you must possess some crazy. But fascinating none the less. well worth reading.

Super cute! I chose this book for my kids because they are forever making up and telling jokes, and most of them are just bad haha! This book has some very notable weaknesses:1. The sentences are strange, to the point of being meaningless, and do not always have a word order that is consistent with good Greek, either Koine or Attic. Thus the students learn to read Greek as though they were deciphering a math problem, rather than reading meaningful language.2. There are grammatical mistakes throughout (especially neuter plural nouns which have plural verbs instead of singular).Overall, my students found it frustrating as well as not a lot of help in really mastering the language. The authors' time would have been better spent writing a narrative-based companion to the textbook (where students could encounter large volumes of Greek in a meaningful context), and exercises which would help the students learn to read and write well in Greek rather than just translate back and forth.

This workbook has been an indispensable part of the learning process as I have been teaching myself Greek. It is an excellent companion to the text by David Alan Black and provides a lot of opportunities for translation work both from Greek to English and English to Greek. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. One caveat, the workbook does NOT come with an answer key.However, if you email india.harkless@lifeway.com you may request an answer key if you are a teacher or a self-learner. You will have to electronically sign a pdf document saying that you will not distribute the answers and that sort of thing, but that is standard practice.If you get the text book by Black I strongly, strongly recommend purchasing this workbook as well. The extra translation work is extremely helpful and goes a long way in helping you get a stronger working grasp on the material in each chapter that builds upon each previous chapter. I recommend doing the work in pencil so you can erase your answers and go back through the sections and do them again.

I taught a Greek class and used this workbook along with Black's textbook. Thus I came to know the workbook well, not just my perspective but that of the students in the class. The quality of the workbook is lower than Black's textbook. Here are some of the weaknesses:First, the Greek-to-English sentences are often bizarre to the point where you can hardly know if you got the translation right. For example, p. 129, exercise 12. This should be translated, "Immediately the friends received peace, but the disciples will not eat the letters of life." Huh? These kinds of weird sentences are throughout the book and distract from its utility. Often it got me very frustrated.Some of the times, sentences are introduced before the relevant material has been taught in the textbook. For example, p. 121 exercise 27 uses the imperfect middle / passive (ebaptizonto) before it was taught. These little errors make students' lives difficult.The book does have notable strengths. The matching, multiple choice, and true / false components are at the right level and help reinforce the material. The preposition table on p. 69 was similarly very helpful. I liked the Greek-to-English section quite a bit (note that the answer key does not provide accents, which is unfortunate.) Note that there are no sentences from the Bible in the workbook (unlike Mounce's workbook, for example). This means that you are actually translating, not recalling verses from memory. This is a strength of the book though I would have preferred a small section of translations from the Bible, partly to help motivate students.I would recommend to the authors of the workbook that they prepare a new edition making the sentences more sensible, carefully proof the book, and add accents to the answer key.

This workbook is fantastic.Though I have no clue why the publisher/authors are so stingy about the answer key it is available and essential. I acquired by emailing india.harkless@lifeway.comI was a first year student of Dr. Black's 7 years ago and love his approach to teaching. Now I'm taking my greek up again in self-study and needed to decide if I was going to stick with Dr. Black or move over to Mounce. One of my key goals is to "Understand Deeply." The huge benefit of self-study is that I can progress at my own pace. But I knew I needed lots of exercises to ensure I really understood each's chapter's concepts deeply. This workbook is perfect. Here are its strengths:1. Non-preditcability. This is huge. So often with Black's exercises I could just guess my way through the grammar if I knew most of the vocab. Not with this workbook. You must always be on your toes. This is a massive win for learning.2. Balance of translation/Grammar - Black's book only gives translation exercises, this book gives both.3. Quantity - If a student completes the textbook exercises and all of these supplemental exercises there's a very good chance he's done enough to know most of the material.4. Less Common Grammar Concepts - Like Black's exercises, the supplemental exercises (especailly the Greek to English translation) often use some of the minor grammar points of each lesson. Encountering them in translation helps cement it into your brain.

This review is in reference to the usability of the Kindle version. With the greek language being part text and part pictures it is not only difficult to read but useless in terms of being printed and used as a workbook. If a PDF version were available, it could be of good use. My recommendation is that you get the physical workbook if you intend to use it; otherwise, be prepared to go through the refund process for Kindle purchases.

Trouble is a brave, frank excursion into some of the dark places in Mr. Shields’ mind. He uses collage technique to assemble quotes that support or undercut his positions. Fans of collage will be enthralled. I am less of a fan—it has its place but there can be too much of the good thing. In a personal essay (and this is a very personal essay) it leads to doubt about whether the borrowed text supports the protagonist’s position, destabilizes it, or influences its direction. I am sure that is exactly what Mr. Shields wants collage to do. But it makes a “personal essay” less personal. So I give this 4 of 5 stars but fans of collage will love it more than I did.

For all its brevity, The Trouble With Men packs a punch. The book stays with me. I found it both deep and disconcerting. I admire the guts it took to write this. Shields strips away the armor of the self and leaves us with the meticulously constructed artifice of the book. The Trouble With Men goes further than almost anything I’ve read to break down the barriers between what’s public and what’s private. The book is a cri du couer about pain, humiliation and our inability to connect. Shields worked on this book for many years and calls it his “most self-mortifying.” The Trouble With Men may be difficult and defy easy categorization but it's also bold, singular and I suspect it will last.

David Shields’ powerful new book is part of a nonfiction series, but is much more than that. There are countless quotes, from Montaigne to Trump. But the treatment of them, and Shields’ placement, reflections, and conclusions take on the expression of the masterful fiction writer that he is. Beyond these generalities, be prepared to read some of the most compelling prose on the unfathomable predicaments between men and women ever written.

David Shields is out with a book that could be designated Enough About You: Volume Six. He’s continuing to investigate and excavate his “damned, doomed self” in The Trouble with Men: Reflections on Sex, Love, Marriage, Porn, and Power, and those who have read him will know that the title is as much of an equivocation as everything else in this intellectually challenging work, which might--given how intently it focuses upon Shields’ own sexual obsessiveness--have been alternately titled The Trouble with Me. Shields has always been absolutely fearless in self-disclosure in his lyrical essays, and The Trouble with Men dizzyingly raises the ante on that personal recklessness by including his actual marriage as a substantial element of this latest installment of project of his literary self-analysis. Consequently, the new book contains chapters such as “Let’s Say I’m Writing a Love Letter to You,” “The Four People in Every Bedroom,” and “This is the Part Where You’re Supposed to Say I Love You.” “Let’s Say I’m Writing a Love Letter” and “the Part Where You’re Supposed to Say” are very typical Shields equivocations: he has never met a contradiction he won’t identify with and (reluctantly?) embrace, and readers seeking books possessed of clear, authoritative and certain conclusions about human sexuality need to visit the self-help aisle—The Trouble with Men is about nothing more than the cradle to grave trouble that men (women, too, but maybe less) have with sex, and there’s just no self-help for it.That doesn’t mean, however, that The Trouble with Men doesn’t consistently illuminate sexual customs not often discussed at cocktail parties: for instance, Shields employs his many sources to explain when and why American women began to shave their nether parts. Like all of Shields’s work since he repudiated the novel, The Trouble with Men is a familiar blend of memoir, film and literary criticism, erotic meditation, personal confession, and sardonic appreciation--all of it held together by the technique of collage which, Shields explained in How Literature Saved My Life, “demands that the reader figure out for herself where she is and where she’s going (hint: she’s going somewhere quite specific, guided all along by the subterranean collagist).” In The Trouble with Men, the “subterranean collagist” returns us relentlessly to the text as a love letter to Shields’ wife—a love letter he is certain she won’t appreciate in the least. And yet, those reluctant to eavesdrop intimately for one hundred sixty pages on a real world marriage can take solace in the fact that Shields’s books, confessional and self-exposing as they always appear, inevitably contain enough literary irony to turn his narrator into a fiction and, in The Trouble with Men, the narrator’s wife into the idea of a difficult marital partner. That trick of fictionalized self-exposure is the most significant achievement of Shields’s literary oeuvre, and if you don’t read The Trouble with Men for its complex illuminations of human sexuality, read it instead for its exemplification of one writer’s commitment to enacting in prose the courage of his existential convictions.

David Shields’ new book about sex is, in the best possible sense, like floating through one of those funhouse Rivers of Horror. I read in one sitting and in the course of the reading many odd and disturbing things jumped out of the dark, aiming at me. More things than normal, like machine gun more. It’s a punishing work, punishing us for all our sins, confessed and likely not. Punishing us gleefully, daintily, cruelly, self-consciously, with malice aforethought, and afterthought, with recognition and shame, with striking realization and the thought we thought we had dodged. The work is wide-ranging, utterly unique, entertaining in the highest and lowest ways, and sometimes utterly baffling. It’s a compendium of Shield’s thoughts and those of others nominally attributed, souls greater and lesser than the author, as I’m sure he would be the first to point out. It’s a ground-breaking book like many of Shields’ more recent works--new territory, new angles of view, new and often multi-banked shots that you will think about in bits and pieces, with pleasure and curiosity, with yourself front and center, with your own deeply personal history and experience firmly in the frame. You had better read it in private, at least the first time.

Mr. Kurtz has been trying to clue in Americans (for many years) how journalists have been used - and have willingly participated in government power struggles. This book is extremely timely with the Release The Memo movement (soon to be a released memo?). Anyone following the Release the Memo timeline and watched CNN NOT jump on this story when it broke on 1/18/18, and then Schiff and Feinstein sending threatening memos to facebook and twitter, telling them that the #releasethememo hashtag is being promoted on by Russian Bots (it's not) and asking to repress those people is really starting to understanding exactly everything Kurtz explains in Media Madness. And watching CNN's Chris Cuomo spout the same nonsense only crystallizes how media has nothing to do with truth and everything to do with status. With so many distractions (who is telling the truth, who do we believe?) - this book will help you understand how the media operates, distracts, and how to wade through "madness."

Interesting read. I'm a Kurtz fan. He reports on how the news media reports the "news", which, as a former "news junkie" interests me. Plus, you will never know how he votes. He's one of the last real journalists who reports without revealing personal bias.. I didn't go 4 stars because the subject is depressing. Not Kurtz's fault. His thesis is that President Trump is temporary, the damage the press is doing to its credibility will be lasting. That's beyond sad. He tells the story without opinion until the Afterword. He trashes no one. He just says what happened and who said what. Remember that? It's used to be journalism.Looking at the story through Kurtz eyes, you see these people know each other. Politicians, reporters, "celebrities" have a history with each other. It's like the nastiest high school clique. Bullying, public shaming, back stabbing, name calling and gossiping. Ugh!The news media no longer tells us what's going on in the world in a straightforward way. It's all click bait. They have no idea of "we, the people" and they don't care. It's like the press all sank to "National Inquirer" standards. Except Howie Kurtz.... and maybe Stuart Varney.

Journalism is in my blood. My grandfather was editor of the Chicago Times and then served as Executive Editor of the Chicago Sun-Times after the Times was acquired by Marshall Field Enterprises. My mother followed in his footsteps with a local newsletter, SCOOP, which focused on the actions of our local village board (Deerfield, Illinois). Our dinner table was frequented by reporters from the local, regional and national papers, and a Pulitzer Prize winning editorial cartoonist, HerBlock, who went to school with my parents.My grandfather would often sit with me and take me through a newspaper to show me good journalism and bad journalism (look at the use of adjectives and adverbs!). He was emphatic that opinion pieces belonged not in the news section but on the editorial page(s). The job of a journalist was to report the facts and let the reader draw their own conclusions.Despite today’s claims and concerns with the pervasiveness of “FAKE NEWS,” poor journalism has been around since “Yellow Journalism” had its heyday in the late 19th Century. Yellow Journalism was a style of newspaper reporting that emphasized sensationalism over facts. It sells and its purveyors find it very profitable.The depths to which journalistic standards have fallen today can find its roots Watergate, after Washington Post reporters Woodward and Bernstein garnered national attention for their investigative reporting. The investigative reporter became the story and with it, fame and big money. More recently, the slow death of the print media (Facebook and Google sucked away the advertising that supported reporting and fact-checking), the ubiquitousness of social media making reporters and commentators of us all, and the rising need for clicks and page views in a crowded information marketplace have taken journalism and with it, the credibility of mainstream media to new depths.Sharyl Attkisson’s “Smear” and Howard Kurtz’s “Media Madness” are two important books that provide objective insights into the state of journalism today. Attkisson’s book is a serious investigative effort and is the far better read. In it, she meticulously reports on how the news media has allowed itself to become co-opted by political, corporate and other special interests. She provides great detail on how political operatives have been invited into the newsroom as consultants then as reporters, anchors, and managers. Boundaries (the proverbial “Chinese Wall”) that separated news from opinion have evaporated. Intermingling is not only tolerated, it’s encouraged.Attkisson exposes smear secrets, its financial underpinnings and its unchallenged path into mainstream media stories. “The smear artist specializes in character assassination driven by passion, ideology and money. It is profitable…making people rich. It has become our biggest global export.” She goes on to note that the smear is equally happy to be the tool of the government, corporations, special interests, and both Democrats and Republicans.Kurtz plays it straight down the middle. He offers straight reporting on the recent Trump-related-madness of the media that draws from a wide array of reporting and commentary from newspapers, magazines, networks, websites and social media. He believes that the fundamental values of journalism have gotten twisted with the normal rules of balance and “attempted” objectivity being suspended…dismissed as a relic. Kurtz has harsh words for his profession and believes that the media has become tribal with news sources serving as a personal badge of partisan political ideology.“The press’s attempt to normalizing Trump’s presidency has led to abnormal lying journalism…Perhaps the greatest offense is the distain and derision, if not outright revulsion that seeps into so many reports and segments about the president. This spills into the culture as well.”Social psychology shows that people tend to spread falsehoods when they feel obligated to have an opinion about something they know little about – and when they feel they are not going to be challenged on it.When people hear a false claim repeated even just once, they are more likely to let it override their prior knowledge on the subject and believe it. This is called the “illusory truth effect,” which shows that repeated statements are thought to be truer than statements heard for the first time. . It’s easier to process information the second time you hear. It is also time-consuming and difficult to access our previous knowledge, so we often go with information that is close enough. This is a concept promoted by activist Saul Alinsky.We must be vigilant. We must do our homework and be open to hear opposing sides of an issue. We must be skeptical and analytical in our thinking. A lot of our problems today are because many people do not take the time to think as they ought to and are prey for misinformation. Check the source. Why is this person telling me this? What does this person have to gain? If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. We suffer from confirmation bias and believe something that conforms to what we already think or want. Ask questions. Why do you think like that? How do you know that to be true? Don’t trust your gut. People who pause and think about whether information is true are better able to detect false information. Seek evidence. Facts don’t lie…but check them to make sure they are real. Pay attention to people who discount evidence. This is a big red flag.Smears and the present media madness stem from those who want to win arguments, gain status, and get money to get what they want. Language is used to bend and twist the world into delivering what they want. It is an attempt to manipulate and influence others.Fake news is not external but internal. It persists because we allow it. We need to be better stewards and demand that those who deliver the news do the same. Archbishop Charles J. Chaput notes that “honesty needs protection of those who recognize its value and commit themselves to good stewardship.”

This is a superb book that I highly recommend to everyone, especially journalists and politicians. I am writing this review as someone involved in the media business, having started my career as a reporter for UPI in 1974 and, since 1978, as a person responsible for syndicating political columnists and editorial cartoonists, and I have never been so surprised and confused by the obvious hatred that exists between a president and the media."Hatred" is not an exaggeration. Howard Kurtz analyzes this phenomenon in prose that is fast-paced and compelling, and his insights are unique because he is not beholden to either political side. If you see this book as a defense of Trump, then your anti-Trump bias is blinding you, and if you see this book as a defense of Washington journalists, then your pro-Trump bias is blinding you. I write this after reading some of the reviews on Amazon, where one reviewer says the book is an apologia for Trump and another says it is a defense of the media establishment. I loved this book and found it helpful in sorting out political stories coming out of Washington in this historic time.
