Unlike other books about Basquiat, this story, Widow Basqiat, is about Suzanne Mallouk and her stormy relationship with the young artist. This is a sparely written, almost poetic view of a relationship between two people, one of which was deemed a talented artist, and the other was known as his muse. This book also captures the underground culture of New York in the 1980s with vivid scenes of the drugs, parties, creative energy and lives lived on the edge.This story is a harrowing story of a young girl who leaves an abusive household to go live in New York where she meets Jean-Michel and endures the highs and lows of living with an artist and drug addict. At times, Jean-Michel can't live with Suzanne but can't live without her. Jean-Michel comes across as childlike at times, a raving madman at others, but all in all, the driving force of his life was his art. He would leave her for days at a time and take up with other people and he always had a steady supply of drugs which he shared profusely with her.There are other colorful characters in this book, as well as the notoriously famous, such as Madonna and Andy Warhol who also had close relationships with Basquiat. Suzanne shows a great strength in character in this sparse book, but ultimately this a sad tale of her relationship with a talented and famous black artist who found fame and notoriety far beyond his days of a SOMA street artist.

I bought this book for my husband, and he really enjoyed it. At first, the unusual writing style bothered him, but by 50 pages in, he'd become used to it. He has always been a huge fan of Basquiat's art, but knew little about him as a person. So, he was very disturbed by many of the revelations in this book about Basquiat's true character. For a man who is very respectful of women, the book was almost too much. But ultimately, he came out with a greater understanding of the artist and the art. My husband is a successful artist, so it meant a lot to him to see how Basquiat operated during his depressingly short life.I have not read the book, because honestly the writing style puts me off also. But for a unique look into the artist's tragic life, this book is priceless. And Suzanne's story is one of a woman who really beat the odds. Overall, this book comes highly recommended by Mr. Willis.

It's been a while since I picked up a book I couldn't put down. This was definitely one of them. It's short, but leaves you with a feeling as if you were there. You know those books that make you feel like you are in a cloud of something else for a short while? The ones that leave you thinking about things when you are done with them? This is one of those. I could imagine myself right along side. it is very well written and a joy to read. I loved it and so did my daughter.

One of the best books that I have ever read beautifully written poetic will be looking for more from this author! Basquiats girlfriend is a very interesting and had a historically unique perspective

After viewing the Jean-Michel Basquiat's documentary film, The Radiant Child and viewing the motion picture based on his life, Basquiat I became instantly drawn to Basquiat's life story and his work. I bought this book for more insight on the man and the artist. This book is a quick read and it really does a great job in providing snapshots into the life of one of the greatest, most innovative visual artists to ever live. Whether you are conducting research on Basquiat or just want to know more about him, this book is a must-read. It is kooky, cerebral, tragic, melancholy, funny, and most of all poignant.

I bought this for my husband who likes all things Basquiat and he loved it, saying it gave more insight into his life. It's not a large book to read, and its a simple format, so if you liked Basquiat you'll enjoy this book.

Jean-Michel Basquait speaking Spanish is inspiring more than anything. I'd like to wake up an artist similar to him and Andy. I'll recommend this book to go getters in industry with funny business. This book got helluv a rating from me. Time to read through what I skipped. It's nothing bad with skimming when your eager to read.

It really doesn' go into any depth but it gives a sketchy pictureof the artist and his "wife". It's a quick and easy read. Anyway, the interesting party in this relationship is the so called widow who managed to get out of the inferno of drugs and loveless relationships , study and become her own independent personality. I would like to read more about this obviously very inteligent woman.

Loved this little book. Beautifully written and provided a great image of Basquiat's life through his girlfriend's experience. I became a huge fan of him after reading this.Jennifer Clement, a poet, writes beautiful, poetic prose.

This book is one of the few works dealing with Japan's intelligence system and the military police (Kenpeitai) during World War II. It is an essential work for anyone working in this area. However, the book itself is let down by the flimsy nature of the analysis and the gratuitous comparison between the Kenpeitai and the Gestapo. This is not to say that the Kenpeitai were not brutal and that they did not commit vile crimes on humanity. What is true though is they were not anything like the Gestapo as their dealings with the Japanese population remained highly constrained by law and very few Japanese suffered at their hands for holding anti-government opinions or views.

The author actually tenderly tells a tale of overt acts of racism, bayoneting, torture, murder and vivisection on populations other than the Japanese, by the beyond SS of the country of the Rising Sun, there was a disregard by the allies for prisoners of the Japanese during the war up past September, 45. MacArthur was partially responsible and the British cared not for their people. A wonderful read.

Very interesting reading. Never heard of them until a TV documentary. Very nasty people. Worst than the Gestapo. Why was this kept a secret all these years.

I thought this was very readable. It did not get bogged down in trying to overly explain the minutiae of the Kempetai table of organization. There was just enough of that background info to understand the scope and reach of the organization. The book concentrated on what the military secret police did and why and how they did it. Exactly what I wanted. Calling them Japan's Gestapo was not an exaggeration. If anything it is an understatement.

Prompt delivery and covers a subject often overlooked and nearly forgotten piece of history.

Much of what is written here may be known but this book is a very good compilation of the vicious actions by the Japanese secret police in WWII. Hard to read and hard to out down. Opens the eyes.

"We become what we worship, either for ruin or restoration." This is the thesis of this book, and I think Beale does a compelling job spelling that out, working through so many texts from Genesis to Revelation. This book can be read by a mature lay reader - Beale does not require any knowledge of Greek or Hebrew - but really I think it will be a sturdy challenge for everybody. The exegesis is very intricate, and Beale plays out countless connections to his theme throughout Scripture (and even in the Second Temple writings, and the Dead Sea Scrolls).Demonstrating the transforming effects of idolatry in the Old Testament is natural enough, since this was Israel's besetting sin. Beale's explanations of Genesis 3, Exodus 32, Ps 106 and 115, Isaiah 6, and Hosea 4 were very compelling, and he demonstrates his theme well. The New Testament is harder since, as Beale notes, there is not a single text which explicitly supports his thesis. His exegesis then is looking at how the OT tests inform the thoughts of the NT writers, showing surprising grammatical connections between NT texts and the Septuagint renderings of the OT. Some of these seemed like a stretch (and some of them he even concedes may be a stretch) but it was interesting to see.My first inclination was to give this a four star rating, because Beale really does pour a tremendous amount of information into the work and has surely done his work in exegesis. But I have two primary complaints about this work which drag it down.1. The material should have been edited down to be 50-100 pages shorter than it was. I understand that exegesis is hard work, but in explaining the Old Testament texts, he exegetes how the NT applies the them. And then when he looks at the NT texts, he wants to make connections to the OT background and so he is thoroughly working through the same texts. It seemed like there was a lot of duplication. I'm OK with reading academic literature, but I found this work often to be pretty dry and repetitive. There were not a few times that I felt like just putting the book down and saying "enough."2. His thesis, "we become what we worship, whether for restoration or ruin," was very thoroughly covered on the side that those who worship idols become like the idols. However, I was extremely disappointed that the positive side of his thesis got almost no attention. The idea that we are conformed to the image of Christ is no small theme in the New Testament, but it seemed like an afterthought in this work. If Beale had reduced his discussion of idolatry by 100 pages and dedicated those pages to the positive theme of this work (and especially showing how that theme is worked out in the OT) I think this would have been an incredible work. It's a missed opportunity.Please don't get me wrong - this was a very solid work, and I'm glad to have read it. But I don't think I'll be passing this along to any of my friends to read, and for that, I give three stars.

What an excellent book. Beale does a great job not only laying out what intertexuality should look like in Chapter 1, but then he actually nails it throughout the remainder of the book. His spot on exegesis of various passages shows not only a high level of scholarship, but also a man who has wrestled with and been impacted by the texts. I am very grateful for this work. I have studied passages like Is. 6, Ex. 32, Gen.3 and so on. He has opened doors and made connections that I had never even considered. This book is good for any serious student of scripture who seeks to discover a biblical theme that often goes overlooked. I would encourage all readers to have their highlighters and pens--you will need it.

Beale has written an excellent theology of idolatry in this book. His main thesis is stated in the title of the book: we become like what we worship. We are by nature worshiping creatures, and we will eventually become like what we worship. If that is God, we will be molded into God's image (which is what we were created to do). But if we worship idols, we will become like idols.Beale demonstrates that this idea about idolatry and worship permeates the Scripture. He looks primarily at Psalm 135:18 and the account of the golden calf in Exodus 32, but shows how this same idea is entwined implicitly all throughout the Old Testament and into the New Testament. He does an excellent job and gives a compelling case for his assertions. He certainly has changed the way I read the Old and New Testament in light of idolatry.Disclaimer: This book is a heavy and academic (yet thoroughly biblical) study of idolatry. As such, there is a lot of deep exegesis and heavy theological groundwork - so it is not primarily directed to laypeople and is not a light read by any means. Beale does try to give some practical application at the end of the book, but even in doing so his insights tend to be more abstract and academic, and he shows himself to be a professor at heart. So if you are willing to spend some time working through his exegesis and theology, then I'd encourage you to read Beale's work.

The idea behind this book is intriguing and incredibly insightful. I believe Beale performed his task well in writing this book by explaining the relationship between an idol and its worshipper (who eventually becomes like the idol (deaf, dumb, and ineffective), which is the main theme of the book. However, I have three modest critiques of Beale. 1. This work is far too wordy. I don't think a person with amnesia would forget what Beale said in chapter 1 because he repeats himself all the way through the book. That makes the reading of the book more tedious than it should be. The book could honestly be about 50 pages shorter and still be excellent. 2. Some of the conclusions that Beale forms are unlikely or stretching the text. Some of his proof texts do not even seem to deal with the theme of idolatry (especially when he gets into the NT). 3. Beale leaves out (in my opinion) some factors that may well bolster his argument. I think either a second edition or a work along the same lines is needed but with more in-depth development of certain themes and texts as long as they coincide with the right interpretation of the text. However, all-in-all, the topic itself is thoroughly intriguing (sorry for the redundancy but that really is the right word in this instance) and deserves to be studied out. This is a great book for someone to start doing that.
