About the Author

Robert Crumb was born in 1943 in Philadelphia. After a period drawing greeting cards, he began to work with MAD creator Harvey Kurtzman on his new humor magazine, Help! After Help! folded, Crumb heard the siren song of the Summer of Love and moved to San Francisco in 1967. He began drawing LSD-influenced comics for various underground newspapers, including The East Village Other and Yarrowstalks. In 1968, the first issue of Zap Comix was published and Crumb hawked copies from a baby carriage in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. Zap Comix was a success and attracted the attention of other artists, including S. Clay Wilson, Victor Moscoso, and Rick Griffin, all of whom joined Zap with issue 2. Crumb's comics mixed a nostalgia for comics' rich history with a psychedelic exuberance. Crumb produced many more comics in the late sixties and early seventies, including Despair, Motor City, Big Ass Comics, Home Grown Funnies, People's Comix, and Your Hytone Comics, as well as the books Head Comix and Fritz the Cat. Pursued by hustling businessmen who wanted to merchandise his characters Mr. Natural and Fritz the Cat, Crumb retreated to rural California. In 1981, Crumb started Weirdo, a new anthology magazine featuring his own new work, the comics of a new generation of young cartoonists, and intriguingly strange work by certifiable "outsider" cartoonists. At the same time, Crumb drew several issues of a new solo comic book, Hup. In 1995, Crumb was the subject of an award-winning film biography, Crumb. Recent books and comics include Kafka, Waiting for Food, and Self-Loathing. Crumb lives in France with his wife, the artist Aline Kominsky-Crumb, and their daughter.

I had always avoided this book because the title lead me to believe it was just an art book that didn't have any of Crumb's comics in it. Then I finally realized it's a huge book mostly made up of Crumb's comics with some first rate sketchbook drawings and even sketchbook comics, some of which are just as entertaining as his published comics. In addition to this, it's split up into chapters and each chapter features an introduction by Crumb where he pretty much narrates his own life. They did a really good job selecting which comics to put in here. They steered clear of printing a lot of Crumb's earliest (pre-68) stuff and printed a lot of his later work (late 70s-mid 90s),which are not only Crumb's best comics, but some of the best comics ever made, IMO. And thankfully, they hardly printed any of his Fritz the Cat stuff, which might be some of his most well known work, but deifinitely his weakest. I should also mention that a lot of the comics have been colored for this book. I thought that the coloring would look really bad, but I think it actually looks really good and adds to the comics.Anyway, if you're like me and you like Crumb, but you're not really sure which one of his books to pick up, get this one.

I first became a Robert Crumb fan in the sixties. I remember buying Zap#1 at the Free Press Book Store in Los Angeles. It was to art as Jimi Hendrix's "Are You Experienced?" was to music at the time. Both pretty much blew my mind as a young impressionable teenager. (Sold to "Adults Only"? hah!) Its Nothing Sacred attitude and straight-up uncensored dialogue and art got me. The artist himself remained sort of a mystery man. How could someone be so brilliant in one series,and then disappoint me so much in another? He seemed so afraid of "selling out" he occasionally just went for shock value or put out some junk calculated to alienate. (News Flash: Crumb disdains most of his fans...yeah- you too, fan-boy.) This book is an autobiography told in art and text that reveals a lot about Crumb's character and influences. Do not buy this book if you are not into biographies, you won't like it. However, if you are a Crumb fan, it gives an entertaining insight into his struggles and regrets as an artist trying to maintain his own code of artistic integrity. I see his influences every day in commercial and popular art and get enjoyment from knowing who the "real deal" is that they've been influenced by or are out and out ripping off. Buy this book.

Love the work of R. Crumb and how he "let's it all hang out". Don't buy this book if you become easily insulted. However, if you want to see a master of comic illustrations and an artist who is totally unafraid to get in touch with his inner "id", then definitely get a copy of this huge, coffee table book.Just don't leave it out on the table for the kids. It's definitely adult rated.

Robert Crumb probably despises this book, but he can't deny the quality of the contents and layout. I have always loved the demented artwork and philosophy of R. Crumb,ever since I was a long-haired freak(not a hippie)back in the 60's and 70's. His "comix" captured the insanity of that era with razor sharp wit and insight and since I have no originals to cherish, this book comes as close as I will ever get.Its oversize pages, allow the details of Crumb's work to stand out, and no effort is spared to showcase the color graphics and psychedelia of that genre. I love the book and am forever grateful the publishers took the time to do it right.

This covers a lot of R Crumb's artwork from his early days at Hallmark to the comics. I bought it to study his drawing style. He's a master of crosshatching. Yes, it's crude and it might offend some viewers but it's an excellent collection of his art. The quality is very good as well.

I bought this as a birthday present for a friend and she loved it. I too was a fan of Crumb for a while and I saw some pictures I wasn't before familiar with so I'm sure it would be of interest to anyone who likes his degenerate cartoons!

I've been a fan of R. Crumb for almost 50 years(yikes!) and still enjoy all theotherworldly art and ideas from so long ago. What were once cheap comic booksare now high priced collector items, but this paperback is chock full of all the stuffthat made us all laugh during the youthful experimentation phase of our lives.Buy it and spend some time quietly savoring the outrageous art and humor ofone of America's most underappreciated counterculture figures! Cheap thrills!!!

If Zap Comix is what stands out most "clearly" from the general blur of your misspent youth, along with Firesign and cleaner tokes, then this is for you. Good sized, without being one of those ponderous tomes that you can't pick up off the coffee table and read elsewhere. The humor has not become dated with the passage of time.

The other day, I read that something like 60% of enterprise code is still in COBOL, simply because it's been too difficult moving legacy systems to new platforms. That caught my attention and I got this to find out more. This is the newest book I've seen for COBOL. That's important not because COBOL has changed (not in a decade now) but because programming has changed and the coder's perspective has changed. Coughlan does a fantastic job of helping you understand both the computers and the programming tasks that COBOL was designed for. This mental model of how the first machines were programmed in COBOL makes it a lot easier to understand some of the things that would otherwise seem very strange. If you have a programming background and want to understand COBOL legacy code well enough to see what it is doing and tinker with it, this is a great book for getting up to speed.

This is one of a very few selections of texts on COBOL. As an experienced C/C++ programmer, Java, et al, the chapter discussions and examples make perfect sense to me. Much of the key words and examples for use clearly cross-over into C/C++.I was able to email the author for further information regarding COBOL, and he was very quick to respond to my questions.Overall, this is an excellent introduction to COBOL, IMHO.

Would be cooler if it also had SQL database interaction with it.

This is a good beginner's COBOL manual. It lays out the rules coherently.

Brings back great memory's.......Got me coding again....

I have nearly 2 decades of professional COBOL experience, including programming for Wal-Mart in its early days, and later for The University of Tennessee. I continue to teach COBOL as well. This is an excellent text for anyone with a basic understanding of programming. As noted by the author, this is not intended to be a first look at programming -- it is presumed that you are looking at COBOL as an additional language. As an instructor, I am planning to adopt this as a textbook. As a professional, I am happy to add this to my reference bookshelf. I applaud the author for providing such a valuable and concise resource for younger programmers who wake up and smell the coffee... the demand for COBOL programmers will only continue to grow, and those who learn it will find that they have gained an advantage in the programming market. Those with their heads in the sand will continue to repeat the urban legend that "COBOL is dead". Those with brains will get this book and mark a course for the future.

2 years ago I was looking for a good source to refresh my knowledge in COBOL programming, after having programmed extensively working at Amdocs about 15 years ago, and wanting to go back to it as a senior programmer in one of the major insurance companies.I found it very difficult to find a book!In my search on the web I found Michael Coughlan's site, which was very helpful.And now he has published the book - finally!It is comprehensive and effective -giving you the basics + examples + exercises and explaining in a readable, fluent way.I find it a great source, both for programmers looking to go into COBOL programming, and as a reference for those of us currently programming in COBOL.

I'm a beginner with Cobol but have experience with other programming languages. I was searching for recently written book covering Cobol programming but had a hard time finding one. I was very happy when I came across Beginning Cobol for Programmers. Beginning Cobol for Programmers gives a great introduction to people that haven't been working with Cobol before. It explains Cobol programming in a simple way and gives a lot of example code. It also have a lot of material to further the knowledge in Cobol. I really enjoy the book and would recommend it.

Andrea Parrot is a professor in the department of policy analysis and management at Cornell University. She is also a clinical professor of psychiatry at Upstate Medical University. Parrot is the author of numerous books, monographs, training manuals, and articles. She has appeared on many television and radio programs, including Face the Nation, Larry King Live, Oprah, and CBS This Morning. Professor Parrot has presented her work internationally, and has been an invited lecturer to over 100 college and University campuses around the world. Nina Cummings is a health educator specializing in women's health and the Victim Advocate at Cornell University. She is currently an adjunct faculty member at Ithaca College where she teaches Women and Health each spring. Eye-opening. A must read for anyone interested in women's rights

Life in America is something we take for granted. There is another world out there. Until all people are free, none of us can truly be free.

Two women become the voices for millions more in this horrifying yet uplifting literary work. The book vividly details the affects of misogyny and sexism against half of humanity, and how it is manifested around the world. With references to at least 70 countries, no race, religion, or culture is given a pass. Some acts of violence against women that are addressed are universal - present in just about every country on Earth. Rape (including mass war rape), domestic violence, forced prostitution & sex slavery, and human trafficking are some of them. Other forms of violence that are addressed are more specific to certain areas of the globe. Honor killings (an entire chapter is devoted to it), dowry deaths & bride burnings, acid attacks, bride kidnappings, and female genital cutting are examples. There are many stories about and quotes by women who were victims of such atrocities. But for every heartbreaking tale, there are passages of hope. The story of Mukhtaran Bibi is especially uplifting. The authors conclude that violence against women is a learned habit - one than can be unlearned. Highly recommended.

This book is a well-researched and compassionate overview of a subject that is coming to the forefront of victim rights advocates. Both authors speak to the individual and collective brutalization of women worldwide, and the anecdotal information from the female crime victims who are so brave to challenge the systems and people who brutalized them lend a personal note to the statistics presented. Excellent resource for anyone needing an accurate overview for purposes of victim advocacy.

Kenneth H. 1   What Is Total Well-Being?   One of the great principles of the universe is the principle of balance. If the earth were a few miles closer to the sun, it would be an inferno. If it were a few miles farther away, it would be a desolate, frigid desert. But in its present location, balanced at an ideal distance from the sun, our planet is in a perfect position to sustain an exciting proliferation of life forms.   The atoms that are the basic building blocks of all matter on earth are another example of this perfect balance. The nucleus of the atom is made up of neutrons and protons, an incredibly harmonious organization. Yet, it is through the splitting of one of these atoms that the cataclysmic eruptions of nuclear power take place. To function properly, every part of our world, no matter how miniscule, must be in a state of complete equilibrium.   And so it is with our bodies.   The human body is just another part of the universe that is meant to be in perfect balance. We have been constructed in such a way that we need just so much exercise, no more and no less. We need just so much food of certain types. And we need just the right amount of sleep and relief from the tensions and stresses of daily life.   If a person goes too far in either direction—too little or too much exercise, food, or rest—then his or her entire physical and psychological system gets out of kilter. And where there is a lack of balance, there is also a lack of personal well-being.   By the same token, on the positive side, where there is balance, there is a sense of well-being. And where there is perfect balance, there is what I call total well-being.   I have been exploring this principle in great detail recently in my research at the Aerobics Center in Dallas, Texas. And my growing conviction about the overwhelming importance of this principle of total well-being through balanced living is what has prompted me to write this book.   Even as my other books on aerobic exercise have been selling in the millions, and while many countries have been implementing the concepts in those books, our physicians and medical researchers at the Aerobics Center have continued their explorations of the frontiers of preventive medicine. We have studied and worked with thousands of patients and are now ready to present our latest findings to you in this book.   And let me say this right at the outset: I believe that our most recent conclusions about what it takes to be in a perfect state of physical balance, or a state of total well-being, are more important for your present and future happiness than anything I’ve ever written before. In short, I’m convinced that if you embark on a personal quest to achieve total well-being—a quest which will be outlined in detail in this book—you’ll begin to enjoy an exciting array of personal benefits that you may have assumed could never possibly be yours.   Just to give you a taste of what can happen in your life, here are some of the benefits of total well-being that data from our research have shown us can be yours for the asking: •  More personal energy; •  More enjoyable and active leisure time; •  Greater ability to handle domestic and job-related stress; •  Less depression, less hypochondria, and less “free-floating” anxiety; •  Fewer physical complaints; •  More efficient digestion and fewer problems with constipation; •  A better self-image and more self-confidence; •  A more attractive, streamlined body, including more effective personal weight control; •  Bones of greater strength; •  Slowing of the aging process; •  Easier pregnancy and childbirth; •  More restful sleep; •  Better concentration at work, and greater perseverance in all daily tasks; •  Fewer aches and pains, including back pains.   This list could go on and on, but I think you get the point. In short, the achievement of total well-being can completely transform your life and make you a happier, more productive person.   But now, in more specific terms, what’s the formula for reaching this state of total well-being?   Our extensive research at the Aerobics Center has convinced me that there are three basic human needs that must be satisfied if you hope to achieve the overall balance that is a necessary prerequisite for total well-being. As the word “balance” implies, these needs must be met in a way that will keep your body and mind in harmonious equilibrium. I’ve referred briefly to these needs before, but now let me mention them again in a little more detail because they comprise the backbone of what I’ll be saying throughout the book.   BASIC NEED #1: AEROBIC EXERCISE   The term “aerobic” means “living in air” or “utilizing oxygen.” But this word hasn’t always been understood particularly well.   For example, shortly after my first book was published, I was asked to speak on the subject of aerobic exercise, or “aerobics.” Unfortunately, though, the reporter who wrote up the announcement about the lecture in the local newspaper wasn’t familiar with exercise concepts. So when I arrived, I learned that he had said, in effect, “Be sure to come and hear Dr. Kenneth Cooper talk about aerobics, the bacteria that utilize oxygen.”   Needless to say, that is not my definition of aerobics.   Aerobic exercises refer to those activities that require oxygen for prolonged periods and place such demands on the body that it is required to improve its capacity to handle oxygen. As a result of aerobic exercise, there are beneficial changes that occur in the lungs, the heart, and the vascular system. More specifically, regular exercise of this type enhances the ability of the body to move air into and out of the lungs; the total blood volume increases; and the blood becomes better equipped to transport oxygen.   Aerobic exercises usually involve endurance activities which don’t require excessive speed. In fact, when recommending various kinds of aerobic exercise, I always stress that it’s better to use long, slow distances (or “L.S.D.”) than it is to rely on short, fast bursts of energy.   But at the heart of any effective aerobic exercise program is the basic principle of balance. For example, most people should achieve a balance in terms of the distances they cover during any exercise period. Recent research has shown that unless a person is training for marathons or other competitive events, it’s best to limit running to around 12 to 15 miles per week. More than that will greatly increase the incidence of joint and bone injuries and other ailments; on the other hand, less mileage will fail to achieve the desired improvement in the body.   If you run more than 15 miles per week, you are running for something other than fitness and the emotional balance, good health, and good looks that accompany it. You may be running to prepare for competition or to prove something to yourself if you go for long mileage, but you’re not running for basic fitness!   One of the most startling examples of the importance of getting out of your seat and getting some exercise, no matter how ill-suited to exercise you think you are, involved one of my women patients. She came into my office with terrible back pains—so terrible that she could not walk farther than 75 to 100 yards before the pains forced her to stop. As you might expect, all her activities and social outings were severely limited because of her disability.   I’ll admit that at first, I advised surgery as the best approach to her problem, which was the result of pressure on a nerve from a lumbar disc. But she refused surgery; and after watching what exercise had done for some of our patients at the Aerobics Center, she decided to cast aside her sedentary ways and elected to try exercise herself.   On her own, she experimented with walking on a treadmill, and soon discovered that she could walk without pain when the treadmill belt was tilted up to a certain incline. The more she walked over a period of several weeks, the less pain she experienced. Soon, she found she could lower the incline on the treadmill more and more, until finally she was walking on a flat surface—and without any pain for the first time in months.   Next, she started some slow jogging with her walking routine, and eventually began jogging continuously from 3, to 5, to 10 miles at each outing. As this book goes to press, this 46-year-old woman has run nine marathons, with her best time being 3:03 hours—a great time for a woman or man of any age!   In this woman’s case, then, we have a person who had developed problems with her back, probably as a secondary reaction to the combined problem of poor muscular tone and an old injury. She didn’t have any dietary or other problems, but her physical system was out of balance because of her failure or inability to engage in sufficient muscular activity. But when her body regained its balance, she was freed to undertake all sorts of physical activities that had been denied her before. The balance achieved by exercise enabled her to reach a state of total well-being for the first time in years.   In my opinion, this principle of balance through physical activity simply reflects what the human body was originally intended to do. Think back on what you know about early men and women (and people living in traditional societies today). Physically, they were quite active, with the hunters in the band often running miles to track down game and the tribe members at the campsite gathering wood, picking berries, and otherwise constantly moving about.

This book served me as a guide and inspiration for major life changes through the 1980's. Over the last 8-10 years I had not only lost the book but had lost the motivation it provided. I immediately reread it on receipt and have been slowly moving my eating and exercise habits back to that which had served me so well.I would strongly recommend Dr Cooper & his philosophy to anyone who is serious about taking control of their life. Hard work that pays tremendous dividends.
