Review
"This book is overdue. It is through weakness, not our perceived victories and strengths and accomplishments, that the Kingdom of Jesus most comes in our world. And the sooner we listen to voices like Alia and her beautiful Glorious Weakness, the faster we can get out of the way and God's will can be done here on earth."~Dr. A.J. Swoboda, pastor, teacher, author of Subversive Sabbath"Words are powerful, and Alia Joy wields that power with hard-won, unflinching honesty, patience, and love. She does not sugarcoat the injustices she and her family experienced but invites readers to sit with her in the margins where so many of us claim to be but so few of us actually are."~Kathy Khang, author of Raise Your Voice"Alia writes with an aching eloquence, inviting us to excavate the places where we are wounded, to sit with our pain and the pain of others."~ Amena Brown, spoken word poet, host of HER with Amena podcast, and author of How to Fix a Broken Record  "Alia's writing is beautiful, but her content is even more so because it is dripping with counterintuitive truth. In this book, you'll discover God dwells in the places you least expect." ~Marlena Graves, author, A Beautiful Disaster: Finding Hope in the Midst of Brokenness "Glorious Weakness is stunningly written, wholly honest, and deeply theological. Alia Joy's story will help you toss a clichéd Christianity, exchanging it for a vibrant, robust, feet-to-the-ground faith. "~Mary DeMuth, author of The Seven Deadly Friendships: How to Heal when Painful Relationships Eat away at Your Joy"Alia Joy's book is for all of us, and her timing couldn't be better. In a day when we're witnessing the destructive darkness of power, Alia points to the redeeming light of weakness. Far from a message of 'woe is me,' she whispers, 'Greater is He.' It is to our benefit to listen."~John Blase, poet and author of The Jubilee: Poems"This book achieves something incredibly powerful and rare: its ability to heal as it cuts. Alia Joy wields her pen like a double-edged sword. For some, her words will inspire the most wonderful Holy Spirit conviction. For others, her message will be a balm of understanding and hope. For all of us, Alia preaches a better, fuller, truer gospel."~Sharon Hodde Miller, author of Free of Me: Why Life Is Better When It's Not about You"This book is a beautiful account of the gift of through. I am left speechless with wonder and deeply grateful for the incredibly rich gift of weakness in a world that would trick me into believing weakness is anything but glorious."~Deidra Riggs, author, speaker, disco-lover"Alia leaves no stone unturned, no room for platitudes or simplistic theologies. Because she does so, readers are empowered to do the same."~Judy Wu Dominick, essayist and speaker"Alia does nothing without soulful intention, and this includes her writing. Her perspective of the world helps me think broader, humbler, outside the norm, and I'm grateful for it. She can weave words as only a skilled artist who's walked long paths to find the finest thread can--Alia's words are a gift."~Tsh Oxenreider, author of At Home in the World"Breathtaking, moving, meaningful, and timely. Alia Joy writes with exquisite skill on topics like mental illness, suffering, poverty, and weakness; subjects we tend to turn from, and invites her readers in close to experience both the pain and joy through her honesty, warmth, and hard-won hope in God."~Vivian Mabuni, speaker and author of Warrior In Pink: A Story of Cancer, Community and the God Who Comforts

From the Inside Flap
"In her stunning debut, Alia Joy peels the shame from weakness and lights a camp-fire with the husks, inviting us to circle up and warm our hands. Her vivid, lyrical writing paints a place of solace where longing makes way for belonging and sorrow is a hidden passageway to wonder. I devoured every word. Read this book if you want to believe God is even bigger than you need Him to be. There's room for all of us in this wide circle of hope."~Shannan Martin, author of The Ministry of Ordinary Places and Falling FreeIn a culture craving presence, with hearts longing for hope in our darkest hours, Alia Joy is a voice in the wilderness that leads us back home. Her words, written with the rawest form of beauty, paint the truth about our brokenness with brush strokes of grace and lament. When I feel lost in my own life, confused by my own struggles and pain, Alia's writing helps me find my way back to Jesus. Her voice is one our generation needs. Her words offer an invitation we can't afford to miss.~Renee Swope, author of the international best-seller, A Confident Heart Former radio co-host, Proverbs 31 Ministries "Everyday Life with Lysa & Renee"Alia uses her words to change people. She changes how we see and more importantly how we act. She gives us the gift of new eyes to see Jesus in ways and places we didn't expect. And to follow Him. Some people are beautiful writers. Some are powerful motivators. Alia is both. Her writing is a one-two punch and we need more of it in the world. ~Lisa-Jo Baker, bestselling author of Never Unfriended and Surprised by Motherhood

There are a million books out there that inspire you with stories of overcoming. Testimonies centered around how there was a problem, but then God helped them solve it. There was pain, and maybe a really long night, but then joy came in the morning. There are so many cheerleading, you can do it reads that make you believe you can live your best life if you just wash your face, eat greens, and hustle. This is not that book. Which is why I wholeheartedly recommend it.Glorious Weakness turns all that on it’s head and speaks into the places of pain that never goes away, prayers that never get answered, and how none of us were in fact ever created to be enough on our own.Alia Joy has a poetic way of describing some of the hardest and most shameful stories of her life in a way doesn't elicit pity so much as it normalizes our human weakness. She invites us to stop hiding our weakness and failure, as if our brokenness could ever stop God from loving us or using us, and it's convicting. What if we stop striving to work past our weaknesses and heal through our hurts FIRST? What if we start by embracing God in all of our foibles and frailties? Alia Joy shows us what it looks like to glorify God by telling the stories of our weaknesses, our prayers unanswered, and our hopes yet fulfilled.I got an advanced copy to provide my honest opinion. This is a beautifully written book that includes some very difficult, topics (sexual assault, suicide, poverty, miscarriage, etc). I've never read anything like this. We don't see enough of this kind of raw and vulnerable story telling.
I began following Alia Joy on social media before I knew she had authored a memoir that would resonate with my soul and help me reconnect with clarifying experiences of my past. Early in her book, Alia Joy bathes her story with fresh perspective on why we need to own our stories because they are who we’ve come to be. She says, “Words are so simple. Just letters strung together. And yet they shift heaven and earth. They explode galaxies. They have life and death contained in each strand, graced on open palms or piled like a burden. I can’t imagine living in a world where words couldn’t speak to me and rewrite my truth …†What follows are the loves, losses, and life woven into prose that is at once raw and dramatic but without a hint of ego or self-pity. Words you wish didn’t have to be written, but they are infused into her existence. Pages you don’t want to end because the hope of her experience is so vibrant. As a reader, you will discover fibers of Alia’s truth in your own life. We are all complex individuals who can identify, at least in part, with poverty, illness, abuse, racial injustice, disability, and wondering where God is in all of it —- if he is a good God. After understanding her rejections of God and crying with her through the trauma of growing up with parents whose faith rested fully on Him, I rejoiced with her when God spoke deep into her soul and Alia turned her heart toward Him.I found myself overshadowed by her despair and broken-hearted when forced changes in her home environment pushed her further into questioning the goodness of God. I cheered her on when she latched onto a glimmer of hope when she began to discover her gifts and understand her ‘Great Calling’. Alia Joy harbors no pretense. Her mask doesn’t have to come off because she starts her story unveiled and doesn’t retreat even when discussing the cyclical days of bad to worse, being judged, cynicism, and learning to trust God when people who so easily spoke of a relationship with God had anything but godly character.I thank God for Alia Joy’s life and am grateful that in God’s providence He chose her to write this story of grace, compassion, destiny and hope – so much hope. As she said, “As Christians, our native language is Hope.†When I learned about this book, Glorious Weakness: Discovering God in All We Lack, I knew it was one I needed to buy and read. I preordered long before it was available because I wanted to be first on the list of readers. My pages are marked up in yellow crayon. I didn’t want to put the book down long enough to go find a proper highlighter. I have so many soul strengthening quotes marked for remembering. One of my favorites comes after a story she tells of when she experienced grace and the ministry of God at a time when she was desperate for a word from Him. “That night God ministered to my soul … That moment was just for me. God might disrupt my life, draw me to places of unrelenting weakness, pull from me my most vulnerable and tender parts, and then remind me that poverty of spirit is the birthplace of all grace. God is good, even in the weary and worn out places. Maybe even especially there.†#gloriousweakness #gloriousweaknessbook
I have wrestled to find adequate words to describe this book, and everything fails to express how it has impacted me. I am a reader of many books, I rarely give 5 star reviews, and certainly refrain from using the phrase, “This book is life-changing.†But it simply is. I could not be more grateful for THIS author writing THIS book AND getting my hands on it. The Lord has used the deeply Biblical Truths in it to meet me in my need, both undo and resurrect me. This book is for everyone..I have followed Alia for quite some time. Hers is a voice in the darkness that reminds us there’s a reason to hope. She doesn’t whitewash our or her own sufferings, but extends a mutual hand of solidarity to us all the while pointing to the Savior that numbers her days. I have been anticipating this book with great fervor and it did not disappoint..“[This book is] for everyone who doesn’t understand their identity as beloved. It’s for everyone who can’t imagine their weakness might be their greatest strength. It’s for everyone who thinks strength comes from trying harder and doing more. It’s for everyone who struggles and for everyone who loves the struggling. It’s for everyone who’s sat in the dark with a silent God, looking for a glimmer of hope that they’re not alone. It’s for everyone who needs to know that being poor in spirit is the richest place of all. That’s where the treasure is buried.†- Alia Joy
Alia Joy’s Glorious Weakness is a memoir about her experiences with weakness, poverty, loss, and doubt. She writes about the stories that have formed who she is now with a soul-baring honesty and vulnerability. But she also writes with her eyes looking toward hope and grace and helps her readers see both, too.My favorite chapter is probably chapter nine—Starving to the Feast—where Alia Joy tells how God taught her to depend on Him in the midst of her weakness and need. He also taught her to live with wonder even while struggling with illness and pain. I love how she came to see the beauty mixed in with the pain, because that’s usually how it goes—we experience all of life, not just parts of it.I definitely recommend Glorious Weakness to those who want to read a beautifully written memoir by a woman who has lived with brokenness on many levels and who has come to know that God is always with her, pouring out His grace to her and for her.
