About the Author

After stints at Kentucky and Oklahoma, Mike Leach took over a subpar Texas Tech program that had one of the worst graduation rates in all of major college football. A decade later, Leach had guided Tech to unprecedented on-field success and the highest graduation rate of any public university in major college football. He is now a TV analyst for CBS College Sports and hosts the daily College Football Playbook show on SiriusXM. He is native of Cody, Wyoming, and graduated from Brigham Young University. He earned his J.D. from Pepperdine Law School in 1986. Leach and his wife, Sharon, have four children.

Coach Leech pulled us into his world of taking on and changing how offensive football is played! It would be an honor to meet him some day. Further, his explanation of the craziness and abuse & lies he was a victim of and suffered through at Texas Tech is eye opening to say the least!And he backs it up with legal proof from Adam" the madam" James's own mouth during his deposition. Plus the lies he caught members of the university in.... Is simply stunning! Again all backed up by legal evidence. And lie after lie from Craig James!Mr. Craig "Holier than thou, tea bag boy" James is an embarrassment to the State of Texas, football journalism and especially college football all across the United States!Little Adam "the madam" needs to pop both his momma and daddy's tit out of his mouth and be a man! Now Craig has no job and is completely broke! He is begging his former donors for hands outs to be able to feed his family!!! He needs to publicly admit he lied and tell how sorry and ashamed of himself for what he did to Mike Leech! I bet Leech would would help him out, because he has integrity!! Don't get me wrong, they wouldn't hang out or anything, but Leech would kick in a few bucks under those circumstances...... Fun to consider anyhow lol !! I can't wait to read his next book about "Geronimo"! I will be buying it shortly :)

I have followed WSU for a long time and I was interested in how Mike Leach would do. I think he allayed many concerns this year-2015/2016. The Cougs are bowl bound. I had a friend recommend Swing Your Sword and I'm glad he did. This is a great read. It lets the reader in on the personality and life of Mike Leach. Leach's successes and downfalls are laid out in the open for the reader. It's an honest look at the football culture the public is often shielded from-like the Texas Tech fiasco. As he has indicated, doing things outside the box is his way. It's refreshing. Mike Leach is articulate, highly organized, competitive, a team player, dedicated family man and extremely intelligent. If you enjoy reads about sports and life, this one is for you.

I was not sure what to expect from this book after reading many of the reviews. The cloud of controversy surrounding Mike Leach, Texas Tech and the James family was not something in which I was seeking more information or opinions. I have long found Mike Leach an interesting guy particularly with his perspective on football. Years ago I heard a reporter ask him why he doesn't run a more balanced offense to which Coach Leach responded the high number of backs and receivers that touched the ball and claimed that it was balanced... more balanced than most. I love that kind of stuff!In this book Mike Leach provides insight into his experiences and how they have contributed to his divergent thinking. Leach is all about generating creative ideas by exploring solutions from as many different angles as possible. He talks about surrounding himself with people who have different backgrounds and experiences because they have unique value to bring to the table. He walks the reader through his entire coaching career as well as the events that lead him to making the decision to become a football coach. He candidly discusses challenges he faced and obstacles he had to overcome. He identifies common obstacles faced by all people in all walks of life... fear of taking the risk. I found this to be inspiring listening to a guy with a law degree and a family stepping out and taking an assistant coaching position making $3k a YEAR. His wife supporting him and both of them working together to make it work.The book is filled with quotes from mostly players and coaches, but there are a few other interesting quotes from outside the football circle. Listening to Barry Switzer talk about the wish bone offense and how an offense that runs the ball 90% of the time, but spreads to ball to many different skilled players is what makes it balanced. I wonder how many called the wish bone a gimmick offense?? Hearing the story of Wes Welker and reading the quote from Kliff Kingsbury could have been a book all by itself. I've always had great admiration for Welker and getting the chance to read more about him was very inspirational.If you don't like football you probably won't like this book too much. Leach takes the time to illustrate in a fair amount of detail his view of coaching and of running an offense. He draws up a few X's and O's and talks percentage of success and how he weighed it with the risk. He covers preparation for each week and how you have to muddle through all the information to filter out the major components you are going to focus on. He talks about different types of players and that there is no substitute for hard work and confidence.There is about 10% of the book towards the end that discusses that events that took place at Tech. Leach certainly has his opinion and is not afraid to express what he thinks about Chancellor Hance, but all in all I felt he did a pretty good job of presenting facts and backing them up. It was all part of his experience and should be included.Hope you enjoy the read!

Any interest in football? Read this book. Saying anything else is a waste of time.Leach gives his complete unabashed history here in the book. Is he a little cocky? Yes. Is he strange? Yes. Is he different than your actual coach? Absolutely. I knew the story and put off reading. But once you do, it's just too good to put down!Raised a Mormon and trained as a litigator, he throws this career away to be a football coach. You are aware that means starting from the REAL bottom: living w/o family, then living with family and having them make MASSIVE sacrifices. The real hero of this book should be his wife!But through this he develops his unique offense philosophies that this book highlights in the seldom told periods at Valdosta and Kentucky under Hal Mumme. I didn't remember Mike from that period but I did remember Hal Mumme upsetting the applecart in the SEC for a few years.But to me the highlight of this book is listening to his philosophies. Little things like having his receivers keep eye contact with the QB even though it slows them down. Also interesting was having a scrimmage every Thursday night of game week for the non starters and scrubs. That doesn't sound like much but it keeps motivation up on the total team, particularly when the starters stay to cheer on their lower teammates.There is so much else to add. Like his side of the James family story (yes I believe it) and documentation in email form from the power at Texas Tech. But, whatever I say doesn't matter: READ THE BOOK! It is incredibly entertaining!

I first heard about this book when the author James Nestor was a guest on the Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast however I had already been intrigued by the sport of Freediving since I read an article in ESPN the magazine back in the late 90's. I remember reading about it and being so fascinated by the ability of these seemingly normal human beings diving down to unfathomable depths on a single breath of air. My best friend and I were out in my pool literally 30 minutes after reading the article seeing who could hold their breath the longest and the following day we went to the lake in our community to attempt to reach the bottom near the dock. It was very surprising to me to hear on that podcast episode that most people still had never heard of Freediving. Hopefully this book will bring the sport into the light because it is truly amazing. The book starts out with the author who works for Outdoor Magazine being sent half way around the world for a competition that he had never heard of before. After witnessing the event he began a quest to understand how this was possible. Along the way he discovered many intriguing things about human physiology, the ocean and the organisms that live in it. His adventure brought him from Freediving competitions to taking a Freediving course to diving with a research team studying sperm whales...he even took a ride in a homemade submarine! I love the way the book is presented, the chapters are arranged brilliantly and it was very hard to put down. The author puts a spotlight on cultures that have used this ability to activate the Mammalian Dive Reflex for centuries. I extremely enjoyed reading this book as it has expanded my knowledge of ocean biology and the possibilities of human physiology.

This book is incredible. DO NOT let the review by Mr. Stanley tip the balance to not reading this book. You will have missed a fantastic read. Having read the book and spent some quality time on the author's errata blog, it seems like there may be something personal between these two -- a drama that has literally nothing to do with the quality of the book, its compelling writing style and the sweeping scope of issues covered. Freediving, Sperm Whales, deep sea vents -- it is all incredibly interesting, and all far too arcane to cover well for a lay audience but Nestor manages to do just that. If you are at all interested in science this book is literally a page turner. I couldn't wait to get back to see what was going to happen with the whales! BUY THIS BOOK. It may change your life. If my daughter follows through on studying marine biology, the trace of that action will start with the two of us reading this book together. (she is 11). I can think of no greater endorsement, for I believe that motivating further study of the sea is the ultimate purpose for writing this book.

Absolutely fascinating book. Remember, though, do not attempt to do these experiments at home. Especially the man-eating shark ones. Everything in the book, including the echo-location experiments, have the potential to go unpleasantly wrong and were described as being done under some sort of supervision, often expert. Having said that, everything in the book is achievable and experts are out there. Occasionally way out there, but out there nonetheless. That fact, the fact that abilities normally relegated to the superhero comics are entirely achievable, would be worthy of a book in its own right.Now apply those abilities to experimental, predictive science. (If it's not experimental AND predictive, it's not really science at all.) The range of possibilities is fantastic. Yes, I know, it's controversial, but either those using the techniques are doing good science (ie: predictive and experimental) or they are not. Either they are applying the Scientific Method or they are not. The techniques determine the impact of the observer and limit the valid experiments possible, but everything that is valid IS valid, end of story. Argue the experiments on grounds of merit all you like, but no other complaint has any standing worthy of the name.

As a kid, I studied oceanography at a college level while I was still in elementary school. I subscribed to all the journals and went on many field trips with college classes in the summer. I lived on an island in Florida, and marine biology was two steps out my door. Now 45 years later, I'm returning to my love of the ocean sciences. This book made me want to do so many of the things I did in the '60s, dive deep, study dolphins, and marvel at what we don't know about life in the oceans. One statement from the book concerning samples pulled from below 20,000', "50% to 90% of what is taken from the samples below 20,000' has never been seen before. They are entirely new species". If that isn't cool, I don't know what is.

If you've read other translations of this book---mis-titled in earlier versions---you will feel you are reading it for the first time. Notes from a Dead House, in this translation, is also a good introduction for readers just getting into Dostoevsky, because it raises so many of the ethical and moral concerns in his later books, though only in outline here. We're fortunate to have the many fresh translations that Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky have produced; any of them will make you want to read all of Dostoevsky, or reread him again as if for the first time.

I have been reading Dostoyevsky for 20 years. Dostoyevsky's writing changed dramatically by his prison camp experience. It took on meaning that his earlier works did not have. Therefore reading this work has it's importance regarding what shaped the Dostoevsky of novels like "The Brothers Karmazov". Suffering brings clarity to what life means when it's stripped of pride, self reliance, and selfishness. You see although he didn't state it in the work, through his suffering Dostoyevsky discovered the nature of God, Christ, and himself. That clearly comes through his later works.

This novel has a few moments of important and well stated insight to the human condition but overall its dry delivery left me unimpressed. The Gulag Archipelago is more insightful for prison life.

This book, "Notes From A Dead House" represents Dosoevsky's memories of those years, smuggled out of the prison in bits and pieces.Most striking in this narrative is the transformation that the aristocratic protagonist undergoes as he begins to recognize the common humanity that he shares with many of the prisoners - even with the least likable among them. The language in this marvelous translation is rich and evocative. The characters we meet are memorable and idiosyncratic, in many cases giving hints at future fictional characters like Raskolnikov and members of the Karamazov family.For any fan of Dostoevsky's remarkable oeuvre, this book is a welcome addition to your library.

I am very happy with the results after my son has gone over this exercise book for reading comprehension. I would give him one subject a day on top of his regular homework. After completing all the exercises in this book, his grades improved from a C to an A!

I bought these to improve and build the confidence of my 3rd grader. I also bought the 3rd grade version, but my daughter is struggling to understand what she reads even though she is excelling at actually reading, sort of a strange thing going on. She gets thinking about individual words so much she doesn't see the full story. These are helping very much. The questions are well put together and thought provoking.

If you are looking for a workbook to help with comprehension that doesn't include just mindless stories this is it. The stories are short and good and I use it for my daughter's reading time each afternoon that is included in her homework. This way I can make certain that she is truly reading something because of the three or four questions after the story. It's a great book for practice...I like that it includes some non fiction passages as well as fiction. I like that she may be learning something unintended.

Excellent book. I purchased this book with the intention of becoming better acquainted with the pertinent issues of the 2016 election. This desire came about after realizing the extreme degree to which news media force feeds the public the ideas that should concern them. It's as though people have become unable to think for themselves, resulting in deep divides among citizens who otherwise have nearly everything in common over issues of little consequence to their daily lives. I felt myself slipping into this pattern, and so I decided to try and educate myself somewhat on how government really works.To put it simply, I could not put this book down once I began reading. There is a lot of information here and normally that would make it all a bit difficult to absorb and retain. However, I found that this was not the case here, in that much of the information relates to matters that are either popular topics or have received considerable media coverage, and the reading serves to provide the background to these stories that is so often missing in popular understanding of political topics. A perfect example of this is the explanation of events leading up to the Iraq War. I was in junior high school at the time and I remember the mood of the country during that period. I thought I understood how and why popular opinion of the conflict had shifted, but after reading a more comprehensive overview of these events, many of the questions or confusion I had about what went on in that period became obvious. It was like reliving those days with new eyes. This was the case with many of the issues discussed in this book; it was like one continuous stream of "a-ha" moments, which is why although dense, the info was not at all hard to retain.My only critique is the occurrence of two typos, several chapters apart, that make the meanings of a couple of sentences unclear. Both are so obvious however, that it is immediately recognized that a mistake was made.Lastly, I have to commend the author for maintaining a neutral, very academic perspective throughout the book. There is no political slant whatsoever. The author manages to present each issue from all points of view equally and without criticism. Where popular criticism of a piece of legislation or a political position is discussed, it is discussed from the perspective of each party with the respective positions of that party outlined without bias.Everyone should be required to read this book (or listen to it read) before they are allowed to vote. I think many people have no idea what their chosen political parties' ideologies and beliefs actually are. When you read the totality of its official platform and see the evidence of those beliefs presented in the form of somewhat obscure but nonetheless significant legislation supported by the elected officials of the organization, it can be something of a wake-up call as to the importance of being an informed voter. I was surprised that some of my own beliefs don't match those of my party and actually found some of my ideas being challenged numerous times as I read. The nuances of these belief systems are critical to the effects that policy decisions will have on voters' lives. I was unaware of the degree to which this is true before this book. I walked away wondering whether it is actually possible to be well informed and still identify wholely with a single political party as most people do.

Jessamyn Conrad does a very nice job identifying and describing some of the most important political and cultural topics of this decade. For each topic, Conrad provides background information about the issue at hand and the players that surround it, sometimes going back several decades. This background was essential in helping me weave a narrative (in my mind) and be better equipped to formulate a position.The book touches on 13 topics in a little less than 400 pages. With approximately 30 pages per topic, the book is not at risk of being boring, especially because the topics are independent of each other.As for the subtitle, Conrad limits her narrative to providing the main viewpoints around each topic, and the arguments presented by opposing parties. She doesn’t adjudicate the upper hand (ethical or logical) to any particular position. So, in my opinion, it checks the nonpartisan box.The one thing missing perhaps is a complete update of the 13 topics, and perhaps the addition of new ones… things changed on January 20, 2017! This is the third edition, published in 2016, when Obama was still president.In sum, if you’re looking to build or strengthen your blueprint of current American politics, read this book… and buy the fourth edition when it comes out.

This book breaks down all the core components of U.S. politics in a wonderfully simple yet detailed way. It is also incredibly non-partisan or biased. I highly recommend reading this book.

Absolutely loved this book. Hope she updates it before the next election. What I particularly appreciated was the inter-relatedness of all the issues and in depth treatment, also identified whether Dems or Republicans were usually associated with a take on an issue, and why. All the whys.

This is a good book to fill in the blanks that most of us have on the various issues we hear about daily. When I saw “non-partison guide” in the subtitle, I was intrigued to buy this book. I was thinking, “Yeah, right” since I’ve never seen anything political that wasn’t biased. I must say I was pleasantly surprised. The author did her best at explaining the many sides of various issues. However, about half way through the book her left leaning worldview started to peek through by means of poorly explained conservative views. And in one case, it was entirely missing as she stated a leftist view as if it were fact. And her source for that “fact” was Slate magazine. Hmm? But overall, this is an outstanding book. She points out the blunders made by Reagan, Clinton and the Bushes, there is not much mentioned of Obama’s policies even though this was supposedly updated in 2016.

This book is outstanding! I learned so much from reading it. It is well written and easy to understand.. It is unbiased, presenting both sides of controversial issues. My only disappointment was that the author has not written any other books I could read.

Definitely a non-partisan look at the issues in today's politics. Very interesting and informative.
