I never put spoilers in my reviews.J D Robb (Nora Roberts) is one of the few authors I reread. Everything about the "in death" novels is quality writing and defies genre labeling. From the relationship between Dallas and Rourke, the mystery/thriller storyline, an extremely strong female role model, the secondary characters, the setting, well, everything, you just can't wait for the next one. Robb shows that a woman can be strong and capable despite soul crippling events in her life. I have a mantra, "just step over it and move on." Eve Dallas personifies this. It doesn't mean you never think of it or that you forget but life goes on.Dallas "stands for the dead," they are hers, no matter who or what they were in life and grieves for their lost futures. To her it's almost a sacred trust and she is uncompromising in her pursuit of justice for those in her care.I think even most men would like these books, if for no reason than to see how women would like to be treated.Read, enjoy, repeat. Finally! Penguin group did an OK job editing- in comparison to their earlier Robb books; there are errors, just because it's spelled right doesn't mean it's the right word.

Another excellent installment in this series. One of the things that has so amazed and impressed me about it is Nora Roberts' ability to introduce a new element into the relationship of Eve and Roarke. Most authors tend to delay marriage between the MCs to prolong that tension between them. Ms. Roberts manages to do that in every book even though they are now an "old married couple."In this one, Roarke runs across a woman who knew his mother - his REAL mother, not the woman he remembered that he always assumed was his mom. This really messes him up and he does not handle it well. AT. ALL. He withdraws from Eve, is generally cold and nasty to her, and takes off for Ireland without telling her anything other than he was leaving. And to top it off, Summerset is out of commission, having tripped over Galahad while going down the stairs and broken his leg. And on the day he had planned to leave on vacation! Eve was SOOOO disappointed! For once, though, Eve actually is civil to Summerset - she shares her concern over Roarke with him. And she actually leaves New York in the middle of a case to go be with Roarke in Ireland. His attitude really shook her!It was great to see the roles reversed with Roarke vulnerable and prickly for once and Eve really steps up to the occasion. She acts downright wifely! All the usual players are there, although they, and even the case, take a back seat to Roarke's issues.(Roarke) “You’re certainly chipper this morning.”(Eve) "Damn straight. Chipper’s my middle name. I’m going out to spread joy and laughter to all of mankind.”

Portrait in Death is #16 in the In Death series by J. D. Robb. As usual for this series I found it very good.I loved the continued play between Eve and Summerset. Eve is feeling great because she is going to have a little peace because Summerset is going on holiday. Well he was until he has a set back. As much as they like to stir each other up, they show their united front when it comes to caring for Roarke. Plus Eve also shows she has an understanding side when it comes to Summerset.A large portion of this book is about Roarke. He receives some information from someone he meets at the health centre he contributes to. This woman gives him some information that totally skittles him and also leads to a skirmish with Eve. After this skirmish its good to see how Eve goes about learning what a wife might/should do in her situation.I admit to reaching for the tissues when Roarke visits Ireland. If you've read the book I think you'll know, if not I won't spoil it.Oh, of course there are murders that Eve and her team are tracking down, as usual creepy and very strange. It takes them awhile to solve and they almost lose one of their team in the process and some get a little weepy over that. All I can say is thank goodness - because I expect to see heaps of development for this character as I read on in the series.Long live Eve, Roarke, Peabody, McNabb, Somerset and so many more!

One of my reading specialties is collections of letters and diaries. After reading this gorgeous collection I felt like Steinbeck had inadvertantly written his autobiography. I started it on vacation on the Monterey peninsula, and happened to stumble upon his former home in Pacific Grove, which made me even more enthusiastic. Continuing to read the collection on the way back east, I found myself slowing down to savor the letters more, and didn’t want it to end. Steinbeck clearly took a lot of care in writing his correspondence, and his great spirit is thereby revealed. The editing is masterful. Instead of distracting the reader with footnotes, whole explanatory paragraphs are inserted, sometimes even in the body of the letter, making for very smooth reading. For clarity, they’re indented, and not at all intrusive. Anyone reading Steinbeck would be well advised to get this. Since I’ve only read about five of his books, it will be an enhanced pleasure to read more. Bravo to Steinbeck’s widow and Robert Wallsten, the editors.

The life John Steinbeck led -- adventurer, writer, wanderer, philosopher-- is here immortalized in Steinbeck's own characteristic prose, unpretentious and true and with each sentence rationed with just as much wisdom and humor as it might bear.Comprised only of letters, and most of those one-sided, the whole coalesces into so much more - snippets and musings of war and injustice, weather and politics, friendships on the rise and wane, but mostly the letters speak of the mundanities of his daily life and struggles with art and love and raising his boys to be fine, decent men, hopeful that his own shortcomings would lie dormant in them. This book is about a man, IS the man, told by days through all the years of his life and labor. Astounding.

It's not often that you can "hear" the private thoughts of another's mind. Let alone a LIFETIME of them!Steinbeck's wife honored him, beyond measure, by helping to coordinate this book. Both Steinbeck's gave us precious gifts, in sharing the open and honest talents they posessed. That and so openly sharing their deep love, respect and friendship for eachother. This is a timeless piece. One of the few books that I plan on returning to throughout my life. For I know that I will see and learn something new, with each reading.

Timeless. You don’t need to be a parent. You don’t have to be a letter writer...who is anymore. But we should...

Every few days, I read a few of Steinbeck's letters. Right now they tell -- more than any biography ever could -- of a driven, thoughtful, observant, optimistic, arrogant, fascinating young man. Thankfully, the letters are mostly presented "as is," in chronological order but with editorial comments limited to those that provide necessary context.

Enjoyed this close look and personal one of John Steinbeck. Book arrived in excellent condition and was just as advertised.

This is a wonderful book of letters from steinbeck and letters to him from friends.

The most unbelievable insight to a writer's genius. All that Steinbeck has to tell us is absolutely necessary for our own lives. A must read.
