Rick Steves really gives you the personal low down, he tells you which is the best ticket combo to buy, what the best tour is etc. The more i read his books the more I like them.

Great snapshot book. Same information from Reykjavik, Golden Circle and other sections of the full Iceland book.

Just enough information. It was nice to learn what we needed to know without having to read hundreds of pages.

This help us navigate through Iceland especially when the internet wasn't available let on the road.

I purchased this book to find activities to bridge the gap between home and school, as well as virtual and physical worlds. I am a teacher of fifth grade students and have been using Minecraft in my classroom for over a year. This book is such a valuable resource for any teacher or parent looking to connect with their students or children. I really love this book and highly recommend it for any parent or educator looking to expand their use of Minecraft or simply connecting with kids.

Although this is a good book it is too old for an 8 year old

My kids are hooked on Minecraft and I love being able to do the labs and 'quests' with them included in the book. Lots of interesting projects learning about science, history and even zombie dance parties. Also it comes with stickers.

My son is very much into Minecraft so I decided to get him this to spark his reading interest.IT WORKED!!He is seven and in second grade. He has read almost the whole thing so it must be really good!

I think this book should actually be called Minecraft Lab for Kids and Their Parents. I'm both a teacher who has been around the obsessive nature of my Minecraft loving students and a father of an 8 year old boy and 10 year old girl who have been playing some version of Minecraft for the past 18 months. When I received a copy of this book my son told me that we would finally have to step and buy the official PC version of the game as he had been playing the iPad version since day one. We split the difference on the $26 version and he jumped right in, mostly putting the book to the side as he began to build with the expanded blocks like redstone and TNT.As a parent and a teacher what I value most about the book is that it throws me right into what is possible over a large range of projects, from growing a garden, to building a musical instrument to building an airplane. These are all things I personally want to try out myself. Giving parents a map to potential Minecraft projects gives me both the language and the direction to engage more deeply with this world that my son and daughter are so fascinated with. The simple and clean layout, images and chapters are also a plus.As someone who likes to engage in the physical world, and wants my children and students to move more easily between digital and physical projects, I can appreciate the "out-of-game" activities like planting seeds, building a matchbox guitar and folding a paper airplane. But as a connection to the game it feels like a bit of a stretch. My son didn't seem that interested in them and I wouldn't do them on my own. My son wants to jump right into the game itself. I think there are all sorts of opportunities to connect the game with the real world, but those work best when they interact with each other. There are a lot of interesting things being done with the Makey Makey to make the "in-game" interactive with the "out-of-game". [...]Overall this is a great tool for parents and teachers who want jump into the world of Minecraft.

I ordered hard cop for my grandson..accidentally order for you kindle...any way to cacelkindle?

My son and I (dad) play Minecraft on the PC, he received this for Christmas and every so often he’ll bring up something to do from it which we’ll build together. Quite fun.

Great gift for the Minecraft lover, and a great way to incorporate this fun game into learning activities for kids & adults alike

I really like this travel guide. It's really thorough, but just not what I'm looking for in particular. I gave it 4 stars because I was looking for something very specific. It's a great guide! There are maps for each location it describes and a map of the metros. They also included an itinerary if you're short on time but want to see the sites. If it's your first trip to Japan and just want to see the main sites, this is the perfect book.

Book has limited info. Many good places to visit and eat in Tokyo are not mentioned in the book. Search online and get google map directions are much more useful.

Good book

Received this today and whilst I'm 6 weeks away from going I quickly discovered after reading this that if you want to book the Studio Ghibli Museum you should do it 3 months in advance! Even though I'm there for 2 weeks there's zero bookings left between now and 8 weeks later! Crazy. Something that this book doesn't tell you are the international prices which you have to do to book this particular museum. To local japanese its 1000 yen as mentioned but in Australia its AU$30 (or US$24) which is twice the price.Amazingly this book simply glosses over major parts of geeky Tokyo like Akihabara taking a total of 2 pages with ZERO pictures! Has a little map & shop information but its completely overlooked. Very disappointing that it caters more towards old people who only care about parks/museums/temples. I do like some of the 'old people' stuff but geez, give the geeks some love! This is Tokyo, not London.Aside from that its packed with useful information about transport, directions & general costs for things but it could use another 50 pages for more photos especially when it talks about 'Sights' and gives descriptions only....WHAT? Sadly Google will have to come to the rescue if you're seriously planning on finding the best scenic tours. The pull out map (which you tear down the dotted line, not rip it out like I initially attempted thinking it was held by glue) is nice but will make you look like a massive tourist but then again I'm not even asian. To avoid getting lost I do recommend a smartphone with Google Maps or even an offlineTokyo map and use the GPS.Bundle this book with the Japanese Phrasebook & Dictionary and you should be prepared for almost anything whilst still travelling light. I also recommend them over the ebook counterparts because there's no potential formatting issues and easier to flick through/hand to other people without worry.

All you’ll need in Tokyo.

Nice book! It has just about everything you need to know in Tokyo! Just make sure to bring this and some Japanese language knowledge (or LP'S awesome Japanese phrasebook) and you'll be-all set for your trip to Tokyo!!!

Common Women: Prostitution and Sexuality in Medieval England (Studies in the History of Sexuality)

Review

"In order to deal with both 'reality' and representation, Karras had to discover and exploit a wide variety of sources. She has skillfully woven together the records of town, manorial, and diocesan courts with insights gained from literary sources such as saints' lives, sermons, plays, and fabliaux....From the book's title to its conclusion, Karras emphasizes that control of women's independence, much more than sexuality, was at stake in the unending insistence on the shameful nature and image of women who were not 'safely under the dominion of any one man--husband, father, master.' Karras is not the first to make this point, but she argues it with authority and with a wealth of illuminating detail....This book makes a significant contribution to our appreciation of the social and cultural history not of prostitutes alone, but of all women in medieval England."--Clarissa Atkinson, American Historical Review"Karras has put together the definitive study of prostitution in late medieval England....Avoiding the problems inherent in many other studies, Karras treads a careful and well-articulated path between seeing prostitutes only as victims or describing them as agents in control of their own destiny....Karras has written an original, stimulating, and important book that will become a standard text on the history of prostitution."--Renaissance Quarterly"Ruth Karras's new book will become a standard text on medieval prostitution, but it will also be required reading for anyone interested in gender, sexuality, and women in the middle ages. Drawing on literary texts, religious materials, legal documentation, and other sources, Karras places prostitutes--so often seen as marginal and atypical women--at the center of gender relations in medieval England. Her sophisticated and compelling argument is a major contribution to women's history, gender history, and medieval history."--Judith Bennett, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill"A study of prostitution should reveal the convergence of many social forces: fear of female sexuality and venality, the fine line between approved and condemned behavior, the regulation of commercial activity, the double standard, and the distinction between the moral economy of the neighborhood and that of the fathers of society. Ruth Karras touches all these points and also turns to the voice of creative and sermon literature, as well as case studies, to put flesh on the tale."--Joel Rosenthal, State University of New York, Stony Brook"Ruth Karras here again displays her extraordinary ability to unpack the medieval meanings of twentieth-century terms that do not adequately describe medieval phenomena. Her study replaces the modern concept of prostitution with the more accurate and very wide-ranging term 'whoredom', bringing to bear and synthesizing a vast array of sources, from the legal and archival to the literary, artistic, and theological."--Edward Peters, University of Pennsylvania"A worthy addition to Studies in the History of Sexuality. In Common Women Ruth Karras argues that while it is clear enough that commercial prostitutes inhabited [late medieval English] towns, what marked these women was not 'money for sex' but their general availability to men. Their behavior, viewed as both socially necessary and individually depraved, is examined in terms of law, society, the life course of a prostitute and prevailing ideas about sin. This thorough-going study yields valuable perspectives on women's position in medieval society."--Susan Mosher Stuard, Haverford College"[A] major contribution to the growing literature on medieval sexuality and will be read with profit by a wide spectrum of scholars."--Shannon McSheffrey, Concordia College"A particularly neat blending of the best techniques of medieval scholarship with the interpretive insights of contemporary feminist theory."--Judith P. Zinsser, Miami University"[S]olid and refreshing work..."--The Medieval Review

From the Back Cover

"Common women" in medieval England were prostitutes, whose distinguishing feature was not that they took money for sex but that they belonged to all men in common. Common Women: Prostitution and Sexuality in Medieval England tells the stories of these women's lives: their entrance into the trade because of poor job and marriage prospects or because of seduction or rape; their experiences as street-walkers, brothel workers or the medieval equivalent of call girls; their customers, from poor apprentices to priests to wealthy foreign merchants; and their relations with those among whom they lived. Through a sensitive use of a wide variety of imaginative and didactic texts, Ruth Karras shows that while prostitutes as individuals were marginalized within medieval culture, prostitution as an institution was central to the medieval understanding of what it meant to be a woman. This important work will be of interest to scholars and students of history, women's studies, and the history of sexuality.

I purchased this volume as an addition to my research materials for the romance novel I am working on in which the main character is a "common woman" - a prostitute. I have never imagined her in the role of sex slave or a woman of low self-esteem to sells her body and loses her soul in the process. While she may be seen by some as "damaged goods", as one debased, scorned, and ruined beyond repair, she does not view herself that way. She sees herself as an independent "working woman" who fulfills a necessary function in her community. She has managed to create a reasonably comfortable lifestyle for herself, with an independent income and a home (albeit a rental) of her own, without becoming the "property" of a man. True, she is considered the "property" of all men in general, but she remains her own boss and prides herself on calling her own shots, determining the value of her services, and reserving the right to deny services to any man based on her own judgment. This book gave me some insight into the wide spectrum of possibilities open to sex workers in the Middle Ages. It could be engaged in part-time, full-time, with multiple partners or with a single partner (often a married man, or in many instances, a clergyman). She might choose to become a "baud" or madame, providing rooms in her own home for others to engage in sex for money, for which she was owed a portion of the proceeds. If so inclined, out of a desire for greater income, or because she herself had reached an age where she was no longer desirable, she might rent out many rooms, in which case, she would be considered a brothel owner. All of these options came with risks, naturally, including arrest, and being charged with penalties for indulging in such unholy offenses, but the risks seldom resulted in long prison sentences or harsh punishment. The Church, while frowning on all sexual activity outside of marriage or for any purpose other than procreation, regarded prostitution as a necessary function in society, in that it kept noble women, young virgins, as well as married women, safe from fornication with men who could not control their unGodly urges. In short, this is a well-researched book that gave me, as a novelist, a much broader concept of what life might be like for an unmarried woman in those times. It cost a fortune, however, (over $40 at the time of my purchase), which is why I gave it less than a five-star rating.

Ruth Mazo Karras is currently a professor at the University of Minnesota, having earned her Ph.D. and M.Phil. in history from Yale University, and has published eight books as well as numerous articles in professional journals. Common Women, published in 1996 by Oxford University Press, is a well reasserted and well received book which looks at not only the experiences of prostitutes in the Middle Ages, it also examines the meaning of prostitution in the culture of the middle ages.Karras argues “that prostitution deeply affected gender relations because its existence fostered the connection of feminine sexuality with venality and sin” which then justified the controlling of all women based on their sexuality. Karras conclusions are interesting as she asserts prostitution was a central pillar of medieval culture as it offered a necessary outlet for the sexual desires of men, which many people thought would undermine the social order if they were not relieved. She goes on to assert that the importance of the sex trade to our understanding of the medieval world is that understanding this phenomenon gives insight into how women responded to economic conditions by making choices for themselves whilst living in a system which afforded little opportunity to do so. Lastly, Karras says that, in a world which accepted the sex drive as natural, and yet, at the same time, set limits upon the fulfilling of that natural desire, prostitution was necessary development allowing society to function because it was central to the construction of gender in the culture of the time period.Chapter one, “Prostitution and the Law” examines the legal understanding of what prostitution was and how it was regulated(as well as what law makers believed they were regulating). As the author notes, they understood prostitution as a commercial enterprise specifically but viewed these women as sexually immoral generally. Chapter two, “Brothels, Licit and Illicit,” discusses the brothel as an institution, one which sought to keep women sexually available for men while, at the same time, keeping these women under strict control. The next two chapters discuss the experiences of women who engaged in sex for money. Chapter three, “Becoming a Prostitution” deals with the things which influenced a woman to make the decision to become a prostitute. Karras notes that the economic structure did not favor women, and these were economic decisions. Chapter four, “The Sex Trade in Practice” is where Karras looks at the various ways in which prostitution is practiced and what types of clients came to them. The last two chapters place prostitution into its social and cultural context. Chapter five, “Marriage, Sexuality, and Marginality” shows there is a difference between prostitutes and say a baker, in that the former comes with moral and ideological baggage attached to it in a way that no other “profession” does. Chapter six, “Saints and Sinners,” Karras says “the late medieval church’s teaching about prostitution and about whoredom must be seen against the background of a general hostility to sexuality and a widespread misogyny.” Having said that, she goes on to note the church’s view of women was not universally negative and that women did not internalize that view. Further, she notes that Medieval culture itself was not monolithically negative towards women as there were queens, holy women and other women who were both respected and revered. This is a somewhat more nuanced view offered than say Johnson, who sometimes comes across as seeing universal negativity whilst Karras sees various shades of grey so to speak. As did the other historians discussed so far, Karras came out of the Vietnam-post Vietnam era, although she did so more to the tail end of the time period, having been a graduate student at the time of the “Reagan Revolution” of 1980 and the turn in American politics towards more conservative policies. Nonetheless, her work is still influenced by many of the trends started in the 1960’s including a desire to look at those people in history who were often ignored and a desire to insert women and their perspectives into the narrative. Thus her work is representative of subaltern studies while not being as theoretical as some of those works can be. Common Women also finds Karras using a gendered perspective and falls within the realm of women’s history. It also fits in well within the definition of social and cultural history. Finally, Karras uses some legal history, especially in the first chapter of the narrative. This work is not only well researched but written in a very engaging and readable style, something which can be rare in the historical profession, especially when dealing with any sort of legal history. Karras does a remarkable job of not only crafting a narrative, but of questioning and commentating on the adequacy of the sources. The author also makes it clear that what is truly at stake is not the control of women’s sexuality, which is certainly important, but their overall independence. This work adds to our understanding of medieval social and cultural history overall, not just about prostitution, and is a significant contribution to the historiography of women’s medieval history.

It was exactly what I was expecting.
