From the Back Cover
From the flap:For the threescore years and some change that I have been on this planet, I have operated like the George Harrison lyric, “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there.†Of course, I have a daily to-do list. But every morning I wake up and basically let daily circumstances affect my mood, my productivity, and my happiness. I suspect I am not alone. If only I took my cue from my rescued Labrador friend, Maggie, who can capture a playful moment at the drop of a hat―er, toy. Just now, Maggie walked through the room, spotted her red, oversize squeaky bone, leapt through the air to grab it, and started a game. That is living in the moment.Maggie’s ability to live fully and joyfully in the moment amuses and even inspires me. The sad reality is that I dismiss my canine friend’s talent to enjoy each moment. I rationalize her skill as entirely due to a lack of a calendar, a smartphone, and a spouse or significant other. But is that true? Is my slavish addiction to performance, attention, and (gasp) devices robbing me of the joy, smiles, kindness, and affirmation that my heavenly Father desires for me―and for all of us―to enjoy each day?We live in the most connected culture in the history of the world, but it’s arguably the most disconnected from God and one another. So today I embark on a journey to intentionally live more fully in the moment and to be more connected to God, others, and myself. Is this goal even possible to achieve? Can a very old dog learn a pretty radical new trick to live more consistently in the moment?―DAVE BURCHETT, from the Introduction

I'm writing this review BEFORE I finish reading the book - it's that good! I could've written this review after the introduction because I was enamored with Dave's humility; just a few pages in, he includes "college dropout" in a list of "credentials"...along with "marginal ping-pong player" and "1972 high game on the Play Ball pinball machine - Student Center, Marietta College."The book offers deep thinking and sound theology - in real language and from a tender heart not hiding from the real world. This book is a great read if you're looking for a mix of good stories and beautiful grace; it makes a good gift for those reasons, too.I love this, too: "I found my refuge in reading and research. I learned that you never stop learning. And something incredible happened in my life - I realized the miracle of how God can use anyone, even a slacker like me." Thank you Dave Burchett
I've had the pleasure and good fortune to know Dave Burchett as a friend and television colleague for going on four decades. He is at the very top in both categories. But he is peerless, in my opinion, at chronicling the challenges, joys, struggles and rewards of daily life as a Christian in 21st century America. What makes all of Dave's writing so eminently readable and relatable is his willingness to hold himself up as an example, for better or worse, in unsparing and often hilarious fashion. This fearlessness is on display from the opening paragraph of "Waking Up Slowly" - a book whose subtitle could be "Be patient. God isn't finished with me yet." I recommend this, as I do all of Dave's books, to anyone at any stage of belief or unbelief. You will immediately begin to appreciate the seemingly mundane, and gain insight and perspective on the apparently insurmountable. Laughing all the way.
Mr. Dave Burchette has a great way with his words. I love his work and this is my 3rd book of his. He does a remarkable job of making this a wonderful life lesson and a great read. I feel like I am there hearing his voice as he goes through day to day challenges. Thank You, Dave, for all of your wonderful work. It helps me get through the tough times in this crazy world. So blessed to get to read your work and to have worked with you. Looking forward to many more successful books from you.
Just a wonderful, heartwarming, uplifting book! Dave Burchett writes from his heart and it truly shows in this book. I found myself laughing and crying while reading it. I also found a sense of peace because that is how this author writes. I have loved all of his books and this one is just as wonderful!
This book is chocked-full of wisdom...especially for those of us who have a problem with 'being still' once in a while! I'm going though it a second time with my highlighter pen in hand. I have also sent it to some of my 'high-strung' family and friends. Great job!
I love this author’s writing style. It’s a funny, easy read but oh so practical. It hit me hard in some areas where he made me realize I need to change without being pedantic. Bravo!!!
Loved the book. HE really chAnged my thought process and how I view my walk with God and my family
Great read.
