As we've seen, this information, while mostly helpful, can be difficult to navigate without help and the understanding of how to effectively distill the best. Being naturally social students are receiving much of this information through social media. Jennifer has written an essential handbook for educators to not only help them best position social media in their classrooms but to also guide students as they learn as well. "Don't just tell students what they CAN'T do with social media!!! Let's show them what they CAN do, instead...and they can CHANGE THE WORLD!!!" ~ Dave BurgessMy students use their smart phones for Google Classroom (since my district has BYOD and has not yet embraced "one-to-one" technology) and is incorporated throughout our lessons. They are/can be managed through Google Classroom, engaging lessons (i.e. PBL), and good old fashion walking around the classroom, building relationships with students. They are not to be feared, but (if done right) embraced as a tool for student centered learning. Educators NEED to realize that the digital world IS the world students live in and we must center our lesson planning around that reality. I'm so glad Jennifer Casa-Todd has written this guide book on digital citizenship for us "Edutechs" to help us do that!
Social LEADia was a fantastic book! I really enjoyed reading it and I learned so much from the book. I am a general music teacher and I found this book relevant to my teaching position. I would recommend this book to any teacher or administrator. Our kids are using social media. It's a fact. Schools are great at teaching internet safety and the importance of digital citizenship but it can't stop there. We need to guide and teach kids how to be digital leaders. Jennifer Casa-Todd's book is packed with wonderful examples of digital leaders and fantastic educators that are guiding and encouraging students lead on and offline.
A critical read for educators as we move kids into a different set of skills for their lives and futures. Communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. Many schools now include digital devices for students. It's time to teach kids how to be Digital Leaders, not just Digital Citizens. This brilliant book lays it out perfectly. "Just as schools have played a role in preparing students to be citizens in the traditional sense, educators must now ensure that our children are ready to be active and responsible participants in our increasingly digital society."
You want ideas that change your whole thought process, get this book. Your a teacher who knows we need a change, this is your book. You know what you want to do but need the language to sell it, this is your book. You just want to learn about this material, section 1 of this book details it perfectly. The other sections are all about implementing. Great book, I would recommend doing it with a partner to discuss and truly digest it. This book is a game changer.
This is an awesome book for anyone who wants to know how we can help our students navigate the digital world. It's important to help them post and follow in a positive way that fosters leadership and global connectivity. This book shows how to use social media to leverage student voice. Digital leadership matters. Read the book to see why.
Jennifer does an amazing job sharing both the whys AND the hows of digital leadership for students. There's solid research if you need to bolster your case with administrators for using social media in your classroom or school library. But more importantly for me, there are hundreds of examples of just how you can get students started on a positive social media path. My copy is festooned with sticky notes, and I have 10 pages of notes to share with other staff at my school for collaborative projects. Even if you're already a social media proponent, you'll find some new ideas and inspiration in this book. I highly recommend it for K-12 teachers, and for every school librarian!
This is a must-read for all educators and parents! Helping our students and children understand appropriate online use is vital to their personal and professional growth. As a teacher who already felt like I was doing a decent job at instilling digital citizenship skills in my students, this book encouraged and inspired me to expand on my practices and how I approach the topic. I love that it spotlights outstanding youth who have harnessed the powers of social media to create positive influence and change in the world. Excellent read!!
Outstanding resource for administrators.
