This is the true story of the musicians who played on the Titanic. We always see them portrayed in Titanic movies, and I always wonder just who they are and what their stories are. I was especially interested to know who the bandleader was. He was Wallace Hartley and was only 33 years old when the Titanic sank. Steve Turner writes about each band member in this readable and informative book. One of them had a father who was a recognized clairvoyant who told his son not to get on the Titanic. I think if I had that kind of a warning, I wouldn't have gotten on it. Good and readable. Thank you, Mr. Turner, for doing this book. It's been needed for a long time.

I've read plenty of books and articles and nearly every aspect of the sinking of the Titanic. One part that remained obscure, however, involves the eight musicians who played on til the end, then went down with the ship. Who were they? This book answers that question and more. It's a somewhat odd book and a tough one to rate. At times, the book is gripping, absolutely fascinating. At other times, dry as dust. The problem: There is almost no information known about these 8 musicians. The author did a large amount of research and uncovered a lot of interesting information but, in order to write an entire book, he needed to add a bunch of filler, too.Apparently, one firm (two brothers) booked musicians on all the turn of the century ships, including the Titanic. These musicians often were hotel orchestra musicians who then went on to play onboard ships. They had to know upwards of 500 songs and be able to play them instantly as people onboard the ships were given a book of songs and could just ask for #23, for instance. Also of interest was the fact that, as the ship was sinking but while lifeboats were being lowered, they played peppy music, ragtime and such. As the ship was about to sink, the musicians played hymns, repeatedly playing Nearer, My God, to Thee as the ship actually sank.Fascinating book and, if you can get past the somehwhat dry filler, recommended.

I thought this was a very informative and well-researched book. Lots of us know about the events of the disaster, but I didn't really know about the men who comprised the musical entertainment on the ship. The story goes into extensive detail about their birthplaces and how they trained to become musicians. Also it covered how it came to be that they performed on the Titanic. The author put a lot of time into this book, did a lot of research, and had many, many sources for his information. I found it interesting to discover so much about the brave men who not only were accomplished musicians, but gave their lives in a most heroic way by continuing to play music while desperate rescue and evacuation measures were taking place. The reader is left to imagine whether they thought that they would survive this disaster, or if they didn't think they would and chose to alleviate panic by providing their beautiful music to the end.Because of all of the historical events, dates, addresses, etc. the book moved a bit slowly but never lost my interest.I highly recommend it.J.Kane

There were parts of this historic event that dragged but in the long run I found it quite interesting. I think if only there was just one survivor who could have given an accurate account of what happened or had taken the time to get to know someone from the band, but there really wasn't time.I would recommend this to anyone interested in all aspects of the Titanic sinking and adding as maybe a puzzle piece.

Fantastic research, sensitive writing, a must read!

Interesting collection of stories well told. A well researched biography of one of the saddest stories in history. It's amazing how well documented their lives were even though they weren't famous until their deaths.

The Band that Played ON: The Extraordinary Story of the 8 Muscians Who Went Down with the Titanic is a factual account of the Titanic tragedy. It includes photographs, letters and eyewitness accounts of each band member. This is a must-have book for those with special interest in the Titanic disaster, history buffs and music fans.

A very compelling story. It did drag a little in spots, but very inspiring nonetheless. Especially intriguing in light of the recent discovery of the violin belonging to the band leader.
