About the Author
JACKIE MACMULLAN is a television analyst for ESPN and a senior writer for ESPN.com. She has been covering basketball for more than three decades, beginning at the Boston Globe, where she was the first female sports columnist in the paper's history. She covered the National Basketball Association from 1995 to 2000 for Sports Illustrated and has authored four books, including New York Times bestsellers When the Game Was Ours and Shaq Uncut. In 2010, MacMullan became the first woman to win the Curt Gowdy Award by the Basketball Hall of Fame for outstanding contributions to basketball. RAFE BARTHOLOMEW is the author of Pacific Rims. His writing has appeared in Grantland, Slate, the New York Times, Chicago Reader, Deadspin, and other leading online and print publications. His stories have twice been honored in the Best American Sports Writing series. DAN KLORES has been awarded the Independent Spirit Award for best director of the year for his classic documentary 'Crazy Love,' and the Peabody for 'Black Magic.' I have never been a fan of longform "oral histories" online. It's a format where they gather the opinions of a varied field of experts on a topic, and quote them and order it to sound like a conversation among old heads. I always knew it had its value... but it never appealed to me.This is an oral history of the NBA.And it's great.I am not sure there was a single chapter I didn't love.Additionally, I've read a number of books on basketball and basketball's history, and I still somehow learned quite a bit.This is a must read for any basketball fan. And a great gift, especially with the holidays approaching.9.5/10 (0.5 removed because there is WAY too much Bill Simmons in this book -- he's a tool)
Really great gift for a basketball fan. The book has stories from hundreds of renowned basketball influencers. If you truly love basketball then this is a good book for you. There isnt a real "plot" per se, but the individuals are telling their own personal stories that come together under certain themes. This is not a book of someone reporting on basketball, but a book on people describing their interactions with the sport. Great way for younger fans to learn about older players' history.
I bought this for my husband who is a big basketball fan for many years. He most of the players in the box and is really enjoying the context of it. I read a lot of reviews that did not like the way it was written but he really likes the way it is written and how it is in quote form. It may not be for everyone but he is loving it and that is what counts for me. He likes all the little antidotes that you normally don't hear and the behind the door discussions.
This book is great; I could have read more and more. Enjoy college basketball? There are chapters on that. The early NBA? Ditto. The ABA? Great oral history. Current NBA? A slam dunk. Women's basketball? Chapters on the WNBA, women's basketball pioneers as well as Pat and Geno. Jackie, Rafe and Dan have something for everyone, and is a great companion piece for the ESPN documentary.
I'm a basketball junkie (especially "Old School" basketball, 1970s/80s). I couldn't get enough of the inside stories from the greats of that era. I felt like I was eavesdropping on history. A must read for anyone who loves the game.

He also shares tidbits from the book -- new bits of basketball trivia that he learned from reading. This book is something every avid fan must have!
