Recently I began to be interested in making soap. The children keep goats at their grandmother’s house and I was thinking it might be interesting to attempt goat’s milk soap. This is a boxed set of 3 books concerning the hobby and/or business of making soap. It gives a fairly comprehensive explanation of the various processes, and does a good job reinforcing the dangers of working with lye. The 1st and 3rd books struck me as fairly well written, however book 2 could have benefited from an editor. It gave the impression that the author’s first language was not English, and it stated repeatedly what a great hobby soap-making can be, as if trying to persuade the reader to attempt it, rather than instruct. The effect of reading all 3 books in one sitting (which only took an hour), was that many bits of information repeated. After the first dire warning about lye, for example, I found my eyes skimming further sections regarding it. However, both books 1 and 2 included recipes for soap, which was my main interest in the download.I tried one recipe from the book before coming back to make my review. Because I’m a beginner, and it warned several times about the dangers, I chose a recipe that used a glycerin soap base rather than a fully homemade recipe that required lye. It seemed the safest way to begin.I made the small, one-use blue sugar scrub soap from book 2, because I had most of the ingredients on hand. For a scent I couldn’t find the recommended raspberry, but I enjoy honey-almond, so I went with that. I used an old ice cube tray to set the soap. The actual process was quite easy, and the instructions were simple to follow, which I appreciated. I let the soap harden for about 2 hours. It came out of the tray easily, with only one piece that sort of fell apart in the process.I immediately used one to wash my hands, to see how it felt - a good use for the damaged piece. The sugar scrubbed effectively, but I think I over-did it on the scent. My hands smell great, but as I was washing, it was a bit overwhelming. The recipe didn’t tell me exactly how much scent to add, but the text of the book had previously mentioned that ever essential oil or fragrance oil is different – and it would take some trial and error to discover the correct amounts for my favorite oils. Although it felt a bit greasy while I was washing, my hands didn't continue feeling greasy afterwards. I imagine that oil is necessary, so that you don't damage your skin with the abrasive sugar. All three books recommended a plastic wrap for storing soaps. Since mine contained both a glycerin base AND grapeseed oil, that seemed wise, so I wrapped each soap individually. I found one cute, tiny ribbon in my sewing kit, which I would have loved to use for all of them. But I didn’t have any more. Instead, I found some extra lavender ribbon lying around and completed the set with those.Overall, very happy with this book set and the first recipe I tried. Looking forward to trying another after gathering a few more ingredients.I received this product at no charge in exchange for my honest, unbiased opinion.
In school we are taught to organize our informational reports in groups of threes: three major components each with three sub-components. The point is to offer a variety of information, with little repetition. The first book was a bad paper that a teacher would have returned for better effort. How many times must I be told the same information in a different way? None of the valuable info about why the author wrote the book was even included! The second book was better written and had more useful information, but again, fell short. The third book I appreciated more until the mid-end, where it fell short of both books - no recipes?? The center book offered the best recipes. When I get a book, and it tells me to research and learn on-line, why did I get the book? Kind of a waste of time - I hate to say that, but I wasted several hours I could have spent researching online.
First off, I’ve made soap for years now, as a hobby. I’ve read tons of books and watched loads of videos on soap making. This book set is a decent start, but DON’T use this as your only reference. It’s free (as of 2/3/2016) so it’s an inexpensive set to add to your research process.Soap making can be dangerous and uses hazardous chemicals to start the saponification process, but the first book mentioned nothing about safety in connection with mixing lye (the dangerous part of soap making!). You need to add your lye to the water so that you don’t get a volcano of caustic and hot lye in your face. That is soap making 101, but not mentioned here. Book 2 didn’t even list the amounts of water to use with the lye and some of the recipes listed percentages of fats, each calling for “at least x%†but when you add up all of the x values the total was already 100%, so how would you adjust the recipe if each fat needs to be the exact same ratio as listed in the recipe. It doesn’t make sense. Nor were there amounts listed for all of the lye/water amounts. Book 3 was great about listing the warnings of how to use lye and water. But still skimped on some of the how-to’s when it came to mixing the actual soaps.Another recipe that stood out to me was using coconut milk as the base ingredient. It listed putting the coconut milk into ice cube trays and freezing it “to make measuring easier later.†Huh? The reason you put milks in ice cube trays and then in the freezer is because the sugar content in the milks can burn and scald your milk when it is mixed with lye. The lye heats up the liquid so fast that the sugars burn if they aren’t carefully cooled and freezing helps protect the milk during the chemical reaction. That wasn’t listed at all in the recipe. It just said to add the coconut milk to the lye water mix – but the recipe didn’t call for water. I was left confused – and I have made soaps like this before. I did get this book specifically at a discount so that I would write an honest review. All of these thoughts are my own.Tl:dr – basic information but spotty at best. I liked book 3 the best but they could each go through another round of editing for both chemical safety, recipe completeness, and grammar.
