Better than comparable books, and I've purchased and/or looked through most of them.It's useful to read this as you teach your teenager to drive, but it's even more useful to get your teenager to read it. I had my teen read one chapter before each driving outing as a condition for the lesson. Despite her best efforts, she picked up a lot of useful information.Lbedt of luck to your teen driver.
I taught my twins how to drive using this book. I thought it was an excellent book about being thorough in the skills you need to drive. Both kids got permits at 15 and now, at age 20 neither one of them has ever been in an accident. One of the one-star reviewers said you'd never learn to drive because it had too much in it, but driving is something people need to take SERIOUSLY as you can kill yourself and half a dozen other innocent people being untrained or just careless. I used the books to create checklists for my kids - six each. We'd go out for an hour every weekend and go through a checklist, and they couldn't move forward until that list was mastered. We even took his advice and found an empty road where I put up an orange cone and had the kids hard-brake and steer around it to practice a kid running into the road or something similar. I found my daughter was initially timid about slamming the brakes as needed and it took a few times to teach her that in an emergency forceful braking could be necessary. We used snow days to likewise practice emergency maneuvers in icy parking lots. PLEASE don't put your half-trained kid on the road with me, or mine.
I wish every parent and new driver could read this book--the roads would be safer. The book gave me ideas and a format to follow to teach specific technical concepts that experienced drivers do without really consciously thinking about. It is written by a dad, so the perspective is personal and realistic. As a parent, there are so many things to teach a new driver that fall outside the scope of drivers ed that I hadn't really thought about until reading this book.
High school Drivers' Education courses are woefully inadequate to the serious task of training young, easily distractable people what to do in actual real-life road conditions. More teens are killed in car accidents due to simple driver error than due to drugs and alcohol combined. It's time for parents to step in and supplement their kids' education with much-needed skills. "Crash-proof your teens" will help you do that. Presented in a simple step-by-step method, this book will lead you through the difficult maze of helping your kids to be safe and fearless drivers. You may also come out of it a safer driver yourself.(My 17-year-old daughter was killed in a car crash caused by simple driver error. The driver was also killed, as well as another teen in their car and a 9-year-old in the car they crashed into. I wish that this book would have been part of that young driver's training. Maybe all four girls would still be alive.)
I have been using the recommendations and following the prescribed practice tasks while teaching my son to drive. He is responding very positively, and seems to really appreciate the fact that I care enough to be reading the book and following the course with him. The book has me thinking of things to talk about with him that I would not have thought about on my own. So many things about driving we just take for granted after all these years, but the book reminds us that these little things must be learned and gives us recommendations as to how to introduce them. My mother gave me the keys to the car and I drove home from getting my permit. How scarey is that? That's just not an option today, and this book outlines a complete course of practice that will definately help me to help my son be a better driver. I am very pleased with it.
A very informative book on understanding the importance of young people driving a vehicle.
This book was probably very helpful when it was current but at this point, over 10 years later, it is outdated. I was also hoping for more illustrations.:(
This is a must for new drivers or those learning. It is packed with a wealth of information. Highly recommend.
