I have read over 15 "train your dog" books from cover to cover and have browsed at least that many more and "How to Behave So Your Dog Behaves" is far and away the best. It provides insight into the single most important aspect of dog training, and that is training the trainer to be clear and consistent and work within the dog's inclinations and limitations to achieve the dog behaviors you want or need.The way YOU behave is more important than any other factor in training your dog, and understanding how reinforcements (treats, romps, praise, and petting) affect your dog is central to understanding what you can do, what is necessary, and when it is possible.The lessons and chapters or "How to Behave..." lay out the critical issues you are dealing with, what is going on in the dog's head, and the types of behaviors and reinforcements to use in each area of dog behavior. I can't imagine a more appropriate approach to dog training. This is the book that helps you understand why the other training approaches work (or maybe don't work as the case may be).I bought the Kindle edition, but I may buy a paper edition, just so I can dog ear important pages and wear it out. I expect it to be my go-to reference for as long as I have dogs.I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand their dog and train them to be the best dog they can be. I would give it 6 stars if I could.
I've always hated to use physical measures on my dogs...I had a professional trainer recently use my dog as a demo... he was teaching avoidance methods (tension always, until the dog complies which this book does NOT advocate and I hated to see the results of on my sweet girl!)... he couldn't use her because she did everything he asked right away (she was trained using this book and positive rewards only...). His corrections were only for her trying to run away from him...Jerking her around for trying to escape him proved to me what this book said: a dog wants to please you and just needs you to be calm, clear, and meet it halfway with better communication.I pulled her from that class and she is not a demo dog anymore! Everyone else who actually came to that class for training dropped out too... I've since recommended this book. I got better results with it by myself, for free. At home she listens with just my verbal commands!
Dr. Yin kept fun at the forefront of her mind as she approached her training protocols. She presents the concepts behind animal psychology and behavior as we know it now in laypeoples' terms, but without shying away from providing us with the scientific facts and technical explanations. She walked the line between dry technical jargon and having a conversation very well.This book is a good start for those who find themselves loving and living with a dog that they can't communicate with in the ways they might be used to. Pick up this book, a waist-attach leash for you, a front-attach harness for your dog, and some cheese cubes, and you should be ready to make real progress toward a low-stress, happy life with your pet.
I am 100% satisfied with this dog training book. I don't understand why it's not more popular. I'm using Dr. Yin's techniques and they're working on my problematic, but improving, rescue dog. If you want a dog training book that is written by a true expert and utilizes evidence-based techniques, rather than opinion and conjecture, this one is perfect.What are evidenced-based techniques? Techniques tested by scientists in enough trials to determine which perform the best. Full disclosure, I'm a scientist, but animal training is not my specialty. I do have free access to all of those dry scientific manuscripts that hide behind paywalls to the tune of $35 per article. I've read several of them, and I can't find one published in the last 10 years indicating that punishment is a superior training technique.I grew up with a dog and we had a choke chain for her. I had a dog in the past 10 years, and I used a choke chain. For my present rescue dog, I considered trying an e-collar. It's really hard to find good information on training your dog because there's so much information out there and you need no training or credentials to be a dog trainer. Example 1: Cesar Millan. Sure, his techniques work, but they don't work as well as those outlined by Dr. Yin. Punishing your dog by poking is easy, but it is more likely to cause additional problems than just removing your dog from the situation and working them up to handing the situation better in the first place. If you don't like the idea of choke chains, e-collars, prong collars, poking and shushing your dog to make them behave well, then this is the book for you. Punishment is administered by withholding your attention. If a dog is misbehaving, you remove the dog from the situation. If you do want to use punishment, you can still learn how to properly use rewards from this book.I like this book because it's easy to identify a chapter to address an issue, then flip to that chapter and easily find the meat. By meat, I mean the part about actually training your dog. Sure, each chapter begins with a few paragraphs that set the mood for those who read dog training books for entertainment, but I generally skip over that. I use this book as a resource, and it's good for that. I also like that it's written by an accomplished scientist, and that I can trust the content. Lastly, the ultimate goal is to wean your dog off the treats and several strategies are provided to accomplish this.I'd be remiss in not pointing out that Dr. Yin's demonstration videos on youtube help and fit well with the book. Additionally, the Treat & Train manual is a cliff notes version of this book.
This book should have been titled, "how to train your dog, for dummies" because it gave me all the tools I needed to become a confident dog owner. I have a standard poodle. He is very trainable, but I was not getting him to behave. I found this book online and thought "what can I lose, I'm desperate". After reading this book and applying her methods, I found that my dog responded very well to me. I just did not understand "dog language" before reading this book. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn to communicate with your animal in a way that it will respond positively. This is a great dog training book.
