Review
“A fascinating account...In Shulman’s hands, the story of the gifted, doomed Paneros becomes an absorbing rumination on loyalty and betrayal, history and myth, literature and pretense, on the nature of family, and of memory itself. A remarkable book, and a compulsive read.” (Jon Lee Anderson, author of The Fall of Baghdad and Che Guevara: A Revolutionary Life)“[A] sweeping, ambitious debut...prodigiously researched and beautifully written.” (Publishers Weekly, starred review)“Betrayal and sacrifice, passion and poetry, the fate of a country if not a continent, epic destruction—all is in play in this sweeping yet intimate account. Yet what makes this book so truly rich and resonant is Shulman’s ability to expose the core humanity that underlies the entire saga.” (Mark Eisner, author of Neruda: The Biography of a Poet)“A deeply researched portrait...Spain’s roiling history, beginning in the 1930s, forms the backdrop to the family’s turmoil. A richly detailed history.” (Kirkus Reviews)“At its heart, this book is about the soul of Spain. The lives of the Paneros—poets, writers, brothers, lovers, and rivals—roiled and rhymed with the revolutions and counterrevolutions of a nation in search of itself. As richly and intimately drawn as the characters might have drawn themselves.” (Joe Hagan, author of Sticky Fingers: The Life and Times of Jann Wenner and Rolling Stone Magazine )“[Shulman] revives the complex, passionate, and faded, Grey Gardens–like landscape of the Spanish past, and, thanks to his deep love for Spain, readers will be enchanted with the journeys he shares.” (Soledad Fox Maura, professor of Spanish and comparative literature, Williams College, and author of Exile, Writer, Soldier, Spy: Jorge Semprún )“A mythic saga of artists passionately believing that they were shaping the world only to be utterly re-made by it. Read The Age of Disenchantments now before we are all binge-watching it on Netflix.” (Jack Hitt, author of Off the Road: A Modern-Day Walk Down the Pilgrim’s Route into Spain )

A well written account of a fascinating family. I really enjoyed the exploration of an aspect of Spanish culture that doesn’t necessarily make it into travel guides. A real highlight for me was when the author describes the events surrounding the filming and release of the documentary that later ignited his own fascination with this family.
For anyone who loves poetry and Spain and even a little bit of history, this is your book. Shulman takes a sweeping view of a uniquely dysfunctional family within the context of the Spanish Civil War and the decades that follow. As a former history major I would have loved this book even without the amazing pacing and masterful narrative weaving of the various storylines. The characters are bonkers, but Shulman treats them with curiosity and respect, gently leading the reader to a generous view of their struggles and missteps. I highly recommend taking a step into Panero World--it made me feel both blessedly sane and totally boring. I loved it.
I read a lot of nonfiction, but to be honest, had no knowledge of the Panero family (and a fairly limited frame of reference for Spanish history in general), but was curious to check it out after reading quite a glowing review in Publishers Weekly. I just finished the book tonight and it is truly a remarkable piece of work, not just for the vast undertaking it must have been to research, but for the depth and care of the storytelling. This is nonfiction that reads like a novel, whether intended or not. Either way, it is certainly no small feat. A devistatingly beautiful read.
Wow! I'm on my second reading of this book. The care and attention Shulman gives to his material is unparalleled. He makes the Panero family and the period in which they lived come to life. There's at least several standout sentences on each page. I admire the craft and research in this book and will come back to write a more thorough review soon. In the meantime, this book is well worth your time and Shulman is a writer to watch. Highly recommend.
This is storytelling at its absolute best. A gripping, cinematic account of an amazingly interesting, deeply researched story. Like other great works of narrative non-fiction, this book is a page-turner. I couldn't wait to read the next chapter.
Fascinating from start to finish. Beautifully written.
I brought "The Age of Disenchantments" with me on a family vacation to New York City and spent a week of subway rides utterly absorbed in the Spanish Civil War and its aftermath, as seen through the life and art of the extraordinary but emblematic Panero family. I'm proud to know the author personally, but was still astonished at his powers of research, analysis, plotting, and storytelling. Witty and wise turns of phrase made every paragraph a pleasure as well as an education. These real-life characters are still speaking to me long after the final page.
One careful look at the index of Mr. Shulman's most recent volume and it conveys the scope and rigorous scholarship put into it. I read it in a week and filled one full notebook with ideas that sprang from its pages.
