About the Author

ELINE SNEL is a therapist and certified MBSR trainer and runs the Academy for Mindful Teaching in the Netherlands. She has been developing and teaching mindfulness-based courses for over twenty years and trains teachers to teach MBSR techniques to students. Her program has been used in numerous primary schools in the Netherlands. She has recently started a pilot project in various secondary schools to teach mindfulness practices to teenagers. This is my first review for a product I have purchased on Amazon. I feel so strongly about it that I felt the need to write and encourage other parents to try it.We have been using this CD daily for over 3 months. It has created an almost miraculous change in helping my severely anxious child learn to calm himself down. This book has literally changed my child's life. I feel like a proselytizer when I tell people about it, but I feel strongly enough about it that I don't even care. ;)I have a young elementary-aged child with anxiety so extreme that in the past, it was interfering with him falling asleep at night. We would do the whole bedtime-routine, I would turn out the light and leave the room and then he would spend up to 3 hours walking in circles in his bedroom until he fell over from exhaustion. He simply did not know to "turn off his brain" so that he could sleep. We tried many different things to help him calm down: hot baths, massages, reading books until he fell asleep, etc. None of them really worked. Recently his therapist recommended that we try some "mindfulness" training. I had the vague idea that mindfulness meant focusing on gratitude, taking some deep breaths, etc., but I had no idea how to teach that skill to a child. I started looking on Amazon for books on mindfulness and stumbled upon this Book/CD set. I ordered it, along with some of the Indigo Dreams CDs and crossed my fingers that something might help.When the book and CD arrived, I skimmed the book and was totally unimpressed. I didn't even bother to finish reading it, because it came across as dry and boring. But the CD...that's another thing. The CD has 11 meditations on it that cover a variety of situations, from general anxiety to sadness to not being able to fall asleep. And they are amazing. They tap into a kid's deepest thoughts and insecurities and needs in ways that kids can't even verbalize. They are...magic. For the past three months, my kid has been falling asleep on average within 10 minutes of turning on the CD player. There was ONE night that meditation didn't work, and that was because he was too worked up to use it.The CD starts with a 9 minute introduction that teaches kids how to meditate. (They don't realize that's what is happening. They think they are just learning to "sit like a frog.") After listening to that several times, my child had a very clear idea of how the meditative process worked and how it made him feel. He wanted more, because the feeling was so good. Over several days, we worked our way through all the meditations. Now he cues up the tracks he thinks he needs based upon what he is feeling. "The Conveyor Belt of Worries," "Sitting Like a Frog," "The Secret of the Heart Chamber," and "Sleep Tight" are our favorites. We listen to at least one every day. And the cumulative affect has been much greater than just helping with bedtime. It has helped my child to be calmer all throughout the day.In researching the affects of meditation on the brain, I discovered that there are studies showing through the use of MRIs that mediation can actually shrink the fear-portion of your brain and strengthen the higher-reasoning portions. This affect is cumulative; the more you meditate, the greater and longer-lasting the benefit.I have recommended this CD to anyone and everyone I know who has small children. The life lesson of learning to be calm and recognize that "thoughts are just thoughts and they don't KNOW everything" sends an incredibly powerful message that I think benefits all children. I even gave our copy to my child's teacher so she could use it in the classroom, because she said that all the kids are struggling to maintain calm as we get toward the end of the year. Now I'll be purchasing a new copy for home, because we can't be without it. :)

Anyone who’s ever taught children mindfulness, concentration, or relaxation knows that one can’t use the same tried and tired approach one does with adults. One must recognize the strengths and weaknesses that children’s level of cognitive development brings. [That said, I’ve found myself in front of a room full of kids who sat with the unflinching stillness of bronze Buddha statues, but that’s because regular practice was part of their school experience.] This is the twin premise of Snel’s book: that one needs to tailor one’s approach to teaching children to be mindful, and that their practice needs to be integrated into their life on the whole.It should be pointed out that the book isn’t just a collection of exercise for children. It’s also a book for parents to help them align their approach to parenting to the mindfulness that the child is developing. It’s also a book of application. That is, it’s not about practicing mindfulness meditation in the abstract; it’s about using the understanding that arises from that practice to improve behavior and emotional coping.Chapter 1 introduces the topic of mindfulness and sets up the book’s approach as well as explaining the use of the audio exercise that go along with the book. The second chapter explains a mindful approach to parenting by which parents can adopt a calmer and less emotionally-charged approach to interacting with their child. Chapter 3 explains how and why breath is used as the basic anchor point to life in the here and now. Chapter 4 suggests how attention can be improved, and mindful eating is used as a tool to advance this objective. The next chapter explores how mindfulness can be practiced using the body as a means to anchor one’s awareness while simultaneously being more aware of what’s going on with one physically. There is discussion of mindful walking, but most of the chapter is about teaching children to be more cognizant of what they feel as a precursor to being more emotionally aware.The next several chapters cover emotional awareness and how to improve response to emotional situations (both for the child and for the parent.) Chapter 6 uses the analogy of a weather report as a means for children to evaluate their emotional state. Chapter 7 expands on the topic by considering how one can manage one’s response to emotions. The crucial topic of witnessing the changing nature of emotional states is the subject of Chapter 8.The last two chapters examine how to cultivated desirable character traits in children. The penultimate chapter describes how kindness can be fostered as a skill in children. The last chapter is entitled “Patience, Trust, and Letting Go” and that probably adequately describes the gist of topics covered. The concept of an “inner movie theater” is discussed as a tool to facilitate building the desired characteristics.There’s a single page bibliography and a table of audio exercises at the end. As far as graphics are concerned, they are mostly whimsical drawings of frogs.I found this book to be concise, informative, and designed to appeal to the child’s need for concrete--as opposed to abstract—conceptualization of this, otherwise cerebral, topic.I’d recommend this book for parents, teachers, and others who interact with children.

I almost never write reviews, however I need to tell this story. My daughter is 5 and has trouble falling asleep-settling down at night like most kids, and dealing with strong emotions. This CD has done wonders and it has only been 4 days. For example, she told me this morning that she woke up in the middle of the night. She does this regularly and has a hard time going back to sleep.She said 'then I listened to the CD and fell back asleep'. The cd wasn't in her room at the time so I asked her how. She said 'In my brain'.Meditation is very powerful. I will say the vocabulary used by the narrator is a little mature for a 5 year old, but shes learning! Never assume your kid cant understand, they are smart little angels!

The cover art and presentation make this seem like a book to read aloud to your kids, but it’s actually a book for adults to read for exercises to do with their kids. I should have paid closer attention. It just looks so cute, it seems like a kid book, not a parenting book. Maybe it’s great but it means carving out time to read the involved text, digest it and study it and then apply it with my kids. Guess I’m not mindful enough to dedicate that focused time and attention yet.

I have two daughters, 6 and 8 year olds. I do it with them before bedtime, and they both enjoy it. My oldest has ADHD and it teaches her to calm herself. It also helps them relax before bedtime. Definitely a great purchase.
