I've been wanting this collection of articles for a long, long time and can now throw away all the articles I've torn from the magazine.The projects range from the very simple - Cutting and Crowning a Rifle Barrel, to the incredibly difficult - Sporterizing a Mosin Nagant. But, with each project Reid Coffield goes into incredible detail about his methods and tools, while adding shortcuts and tips. There is something for everyone in here. Black rifle owners, classic shotgun shooters, semi belt fed fans and those that just want realistic wall hangers. 446 pages worth.Highly, highly recommend. The price for the book was worth it for me, just to have one of the articles in a series that I missed. Everything else is bonus.
Lots of great projects in this book. Even if your not mechanically inclined you will gain some insight of just how much Gunsmith"s actually have to Know and what they do. This book is probably one of the better values in Gunsmithing books in todays market. I guaranty the pages will be dogeared in no time.
I'd been wanting to build several of the SGN projects - but not being an active subscriber didn't have all the issues - and didn't want to spend $20 or so to acquire all the back issues for any given project.All of the interesting (to me) projects are captured in this book in their entirety as well as a number of other interesting projects.So for the cost of this book you have all the projects from all the noted Shotgun News issues of recent history.
An Okay collection of articles, but many involve working on firearms that are no longer affordable, or even available. A nice look into projects from the past but only a few are applicable to the hobbyist with a limited budget. If only those Martini's were still available on the cheap...
The most important part of the book is recommended skill levels, access to equipment and skills to use it. Lots of the procedures may be beyond the level of the weekend mechanic/tinkerer and require complex machine shop work. Forgoing that, the general ideas, and applications are quite good with thorough steps and processes. Some projects will need more information, as the devil is in the details, and details take up lots of pages. JF gunsmith, master machinist, toolmaker.
Great book with plenty of compiled articles for gunsmithing projects. While many of them are far and beyond above my capability (experience, equipment, etc), there are also plenty of other little side projects and things that make you think, "Hm, maybe I could give that a try." Also, very fun to browse through and see some of the great work done by others.
OK book, printed on cheap paper. Makes decent bathroom reading, but don't expect this book to have "generalized" projects that any aspiring gunsmith can jump into: there are far better books out there for that, plus they're printed on far better, colored paper and with a hard cover.
I am an aspiring gunsmith and am looking for additional information on all things gunsmith related. This book has some great ideas in it for customizing/sporterizing common firearms. It is quite specific on the firearms included. I wish it had a little more all-inclusive ideas for updating/accessorizing categories of arms rather than just specific ones. And I also would like more ideas for small shop applications, for those of us who are just getting started and don't have some of the big power tools and equipment for the specialized stuff. But I liked seeing what is ultimately possible with some experience and proper tools.
